Scott Reitnour to Depart Wesleyan Christian Academy for Head Coach Role at Houghton University

High Point, NC — Wesleyan Christian Academy Announces the Departure of Coach Scott Reitnour

Wesleyan Christian Academy announces that after 23 years of outstanding service to the school community, Coach Scott Reitnour will step down as Head Coach of the Varsity Boys’ Soccer Team at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 school year. He will transition to Houghton University, his alma mater, to serve as the Men’s Head Soccer Coach, Director of Sports Ministry, and Associate Athletic Director beginning in the fall of 2025.

“Scott’s unwavering commitment to excellence and his passion for mentorship have profoundly impacted our school and community,” said Dr. David Ray, Wesleyan’s Head of School. “His leadership has embodied Wesleyan’s mission to develop students who impact the world for Christ, and while his departure is bittersweet, we find comfort knowing he is following the Lord’s leading.”

Since joining Wesleyan in 2003, Reitnour has held multiple roles at the school. Best known for his work as the varsity boys’ soccer coach and a high school philosophy, government, and economics teacher. His contributions to the Wesleyan community have been extraordinary, marked by unparalleled success in athletics and education. Under his leadership, the varsity boys’ soccer team achieved:

17 consecutive state semifinal appearances

12 state championship games

8 NCISAA state championship titles

4 seasons ranked among the top ten teams nationally by the United Soccer Coaches Association

Reitnour founded the Imago Dei Soccer Academy and the Wesleyan Instructional Soccer League, both of which serve as ministries for young athletes to grow in their faith and skills. Additionally, he led international mission trips and guided his players to dedicate hundreds of community service hours annually to Wesleyan and the broader High Point community. He has coached for NC Fusion, Piedmont Soccer Alliance, and the Piedmont Triad Football Club. His expertise and leadership are reflected in his service on committees responsible for all-conference and all-state team selections.

A native of Fillmore, NY, Reitnour returns to his home state to focus on family and caring for his parents. A 1996 graduate of Houghton University, he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree from Alfred University before moving south. His deep ties to Houghton and alignment with its mission make this transition a natural progression in his career.

“Scott’s decision to join Houghton is a testament to his deep sense of calling and purpose,” said Leah Totel, Wesleyan’s High School Principal. “He has remained steadfast in his commitment to Wesleyan for over two decades, turning down numerous opportunities at the collegiate and professional levels. We will miss him deeply, but we celebrate this exciting new chapter for him and his family.”

When reflecting on his decision, Reitnour shared, “All of me wants to stay at Wesleyan, but if I don’t go and live near my parents in the twilight of their lives, how can I stand in front of my Wesleyan students and tell them to live for others—to serve their families as faithful men of Christ?” He added, “Wesleyan Christian Academy will be here for years to come, but I’m not sure how many more years I’ll have with my parents.”

One of the most compelling reasons for taking on this new role is the opportunity to direct Houghton’s Sports Ministry program. This initiative, similar to Reitnour’s work with Imago Dei and the Wesleyan Instructional Soccer League, will enable college athletes to mentor younger athletes in public schools through soccer while sharing the Gospel and discussing godly principles. “This job opportunity came out of nowhere, and it’s been an incredibly difficult decision,” Reitnour said. “I’m emotionally torn… I’m sad to leave Wesleyan but excited about what God is doing through Houghton University, and I’m excited to be part of it. I’m excited to see how God will use me to impact the men of Houghton.”

Reitnour’s children, Eden and Judah, graduated from Wesleyan Christian Academy in 2021 and 2024, respectively. While his departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter for Wesleyan, his legacy will endure through the countless lives he has touched. The school will soon begin the search for a new Head Soccer Coach to continue the program’s tradition of excellence.
