Congratulations to Kara Shutt(Southeast Guilford HS) named as the Associate Head Softball Coach for the Wofford College Terriers

Congratulations are in order today for Kara Shutt, from Southeast Guilford High School…Kara has been named as the Associate Head Softball Coach for the Wofford College Terriers…Excellent work by Kara Shutt, the former Southeast Guilford Falcon softball player for Coach Cowart…Kara also played basketball for the Southeast Guilford Falcons and thinking her coach was Shawyn Newton…

Kara is daughter of Danny Shutt, the sister of Dylan and Dusty Shutt, and there was a time when Kara played on the boys baseball teams down at the Pleasant Garden Community Center, and I am thinking she played on a youth boys baseball team that traveled and played in a big baseball tournament, up at the Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown, New York…

Kara’s softball career in college was very successful, as noted from the article that came out today from Wofford College….Shutt was a key player for Elon from 2015-2018 as an All-American and three-time All-CAA First Team selection. Shutt graduated from Elon with a bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2018 and earned her master’s degree in the same field from South Carolina in 2020.

After or maybe during college, Kara served as a Summer intern with the Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball team, and I used to see the kid every day, down at the ole ballpark….

I really do remember the days when Kara was playing basketball for the Southeast Guilford Falcons girls basketball team and they traveled over to Dudley High School for the conference tournament, and I loved the Dudley PA man Skip McCall, and one of my favorite Skip McCall sayings on that microphone during the tournament was, “Shut My Mouth, Kara Shutt has scored for Southeast Guilford again”…..Kara could shut nearly shut people up, and she sure Shutt and broke down many opposing defenses…

She broke a bone in her foot her senior year of high school, and she was just about two points away from 1,000 points in her high school basketball career, and in a one of the best gestures I have ever seen, or ever heard of, the team Southeast was playing with Coach Tina Gunn leading that opposing Grimsley girls basketball team, Coach Gunn allowed Kara to score an uncontested basket, so Kara Shut could get that 1,000th point in her high school basketball career…Kara came on the court, wearing a boot on her broken foot, and she was in SEG uniform, and she took the inbounds pass under the SEG basket, with the Grimsley players laying off on defense and she stuck in the shot, and scored the 1,000th point of her Southeast Guilford basketball career…Coach Tina Gunn, deserves tons of credit for working with Southeast Guilford, to give Kara Shutt that great opportunity…Career-ending play, and some kind of tribute, right there, and I am pretty sure the game was being played at SEG when it took place….

For me, I always loved a kid like Kara Shutt…A great kid, super hard-working athlete, very nice/kind and polite, and attractive too…The Shutt kid had/has it all…

Click On here for the interview I did with Kara Shutt, at the Shane’s Rib Shack back in 2014…Now going back 11 years ago…She was with the Southeast Guilford Falcons then….January 16, 2014…

Here is the announcement from the Wofford College sports website on Kara Shutt being named Associate Head Softball Coach at Wofford….(Will be adding in, Wofford-issued softball photo of Kara Shutt, later today.)
Kara Shutt Promoted to Associate Head Coach Role

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College softball head coach Chelsea Butler has announced that Kara Shutt has been promoted to associate head coach before the start of the 2025 season. Shutt joined the Terrier softball staff as an assistant coach in July of 2022 after two seasons with Ole Miss. She enters her second season on staff in 2025.

“I am so excited to be able to promote Kara to associate head coach.” said head coach Chelsea Butler. “She has had a hand in building this program from day one and has been instrumental in our growth and success on and off the field. Kara is well respected by our players and will positively influence the program for years to come. Kara is someone who every head coach wants by their side in the dugout and is more than deserving of this promotion!”

A native of Greensboro, N.C., Shutt was a key player for Elon from 2015-2018 as an All-American and three-time All-CAA First Team selection. Shutt graduated from Elon with a bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2018 and earned her master’s degree in the same field from South Carolina in 2020. She spent time on the softball team as a graduate manager for South Carolina in 2020 before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After her time with the Gamecocks, Shutt spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant with Ole Miss from 2021-22 in which she helped the Rebels to a 41-19 season that concluded in the Los Angeles Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament in 2022. With Shutt on the staff, Ole Miss posted its fourth-ever 40-win season, and the 39 regular season wins tied for the program record.

In Shutt’s first season with Wofford in 2024, the Terriers began their inaugural season with a 23-24 record overall alongside an 11-10 SoCon campaign. Under her guidance the young softball program achieved many firsts, including its first SoCon Tournament win over ETSU. Margaret Axelson was named to the All-SoCon First Team, and Abby Greenwood, Kaytlin Greenwood and Megan Towery were all honored on the SoCon All-Freshman Team.

**********Again, Congratulations to Kara Shutt, one of us, from back in the day…*********

  1. Andy,
Thank you so much for the kind words! Hard to believe that interview was 11 years ago! I have always appreciated all of your articles over the years! You’ll soon have a couple more Shutt kids to write about in the coming years! Be on the lookout for Easton Shutt, he will be at SEMS in the fall and in a couple more years Addi and Kinley Shutt!

    Thanks again Andy!

  2. You got the job done Kara and you had dreams and you made those dreams come true…Good worked turned in by you, and I hope I got most all of the details right in the post today…Kara Shutt, Blake Butler, Josh Tobias, Jackson Jenkins-Cowart and quite a few SEG Falcons doing good and repping what John Swiethart said….”Always Show Your Falcon Pride”…..Watch out for Micah Martin and others on the college football field from SEG next season…
