Big difference in the girls game was the very tight zone defense employed by the Grimsley Whirlies…They were going with a 1-3-1, a 2-1-2, and they also used a 2-2-1 zone trap at times…Grimsley’s defense, coupled with the Whirlies rebouning strength on the boards and especially the defensive boards was made them the superior team on Thursday night….Grimsley played exceptional defense on the outstanding Page guard, Lola Vanore, in the first half…Vanore got loose for some very key second half baskets, but Page could never really get back in this game, and after the Pirates trailed the Whirlies by 15 points at halftime, and Page still behind by 15 at the end of the third period, Page could find their way home, at home…From where I was sitting, I was just seeing Page having big problems cracking that Grimsley defense in the first half…Very late in the game, Page cut the Grimsley lead down to 11 points, and had a chance to get it as low as 9 points, and that would have placed Page in the under 10-point loss category, but Grimsley got a free throw in the last seconds, and Page could not get it back to 10, and the loss was going to sting for a while, but Page can not dwell too much on what was happening on Thursday night at The Mac, because Page has to face Southeast Guilford at home, on Friday night…Grimsley will also be home, going up against Leena McField and the Northern Guilford Nighthawks….Grimsley proved to be a very good three-point shooting in the first half on Thursday night…Four 3s by Grimsley in the first half, and a total of six 3s for the game, with Blount(4), Simms(1), and Olson-Fine, all finding their range at the Mac Morris Gym…
The Grimsley boys just had too many bodies at their disposal and the way Coach Darren Corbett used his player rotation was enough to keep Page very off-balance…Grimsley kept rotating players in-and-out all night, and each of those players were quality players…Grimsley Whirlies with an eight-man rotation that is as good as any lineup as you will see anywhere in the Metro 4-A Conference right now…And to see the 8 players we are referring to, just look back up at the Grimsley scoring totals, and the guys that scored, those are the ones that make up that 8-man rotation….Howerton was very smooth for Grimsley, and he’s a big body, but he can step outside and knock down shots from around the perimeter too…Isaiah Whitsett gets it, and is freshman getting some big minutes for the Whirlies…Those football guys compliment each other very well too…Brandon, Catoe, Howerton, Carter, and Debow are all important parts of that 8-man Whirlie rotation…That third quarter was when Grimsley really went to work and dismantled the Page Pirates, with the Whirlies out-scoring the Pirates, 22-6 in the third period….It was a 22-19 game at the half, but after a shoving incident that took place right when the first half was ending, Grimsley seized total control of this ballgame, and Grimsley was in charge and going about sinking the Pirates’s ship….Rematch coming up in February, at Grimsley HS, and maybe Page goes to Grimsley, and takes over “The Bob”/Bob Sawyer Gym…Or do we call it, “The Sawmill”?????
Big battle was going on over on Alma Pinnix Drive on Thursday night, and the Grimsley Whirlies drove away after the game, with Two Big Victories….
Where’s that guy that said Grimsley was scared to play page? Made absolutely no sense.
Everybody knows it. Grimsley boys basketball now #1 in Greensboro. Grimsley has the TEAM together now and I don’t see them being stopped from winning The Title.
Smith is the best team in Greensboro. Relax, grimsley isn’t that good
