It was almost like Western Guilford Night over at Ragsdale High School, last Friday night…The Ragsdale Tigers were hosting the Northern Guilford Nighthawks in the basketball games, but in the JV Boys basketball game between Ragsdale and Northern Guilford, you had Mark Guenther as the referee…Guenther, the former Western Guilford quarterback, basketball player and baseball player and he is in the Western Guilford Sports Hall of Fame…Played college baseball at Guilford College and I believe he is in their Hall of Fame too…Guenther in the JV Boys basketball game…
Then in the girls basketball game between Ragsdale and Northern Guilford, you had Ren Stewart as the the girls head basketball coach for the Ragsdale Tigers….Stewart, the former football player and trackman for the Western Guilford Hornets, back in his high school days…
Plus you had our play-by-play man, from GreensboroSports Radio, calling/announcing the both the boys and girls basketball games from there at Ragsdale High School, in Jamestown on Friday night…And our basketball man for GreensboroSports.com also attended and played sports at Western Guilford back in the day…Football and Wrestling for me, back in the Western Guilford days…
Plenty of diversity out there around the basketball court, and the Western Guilford Hornets were well-represented at Ragdale HS, back on Friday night….
Nice commentary Andy. Thanks for the shout to the former black hornets !!
People that don’t know should know….Mark Guenther was “The Man” for Western Guilford sports back in the mid 1970’s…If I remember correctly his nickname was “Swifty”…Football, Basketball, and Baseball, he was the tops in those sports for the WG Black Hornets back in those days…If my memory is really still working, I think he ran in some Track Meets too…
Would have to be rated the top QB in WG football history….Chuck Mills brought him over to Wake Forest for football, and I think that was like going to a ‘Blood Bath’…Maybe a short stint for App State baseball after that, then the Guilford College deal, and that worked out great…
Mark Guenther and Pella Stokes and others making the Guilford College Quakers a Top 25 NAIA baseball team under “The Rock”, Stuart Maynard….I played a year of baseball with Mark Guenther on the old Guilford College Civics PONY baseball team, and we were coached by Mr. Sid Teachy, and that was a true learning experience as we hit the fields at night, down at the Market Street Fields, and at Lewis Center….
Mark Guenther was a natural athlete and he had all of the tools to be pro baseball player….This guy knew the game and in later life/adult life, he got to know Soccer and was an official for the sport for many years…This guy was “The Man” at WG and with just one more touch of the memory stretch, I can remember on more than one occasion where he was named the Top Male Athlete in his class in high school and junior high, and the female Top Athlete would always be Jeanie Teague…Those two had “The Hardware”….
Glad we have those sports memories…..
BTW, the JV Boys final from last Friday was, Northern Guilford 47, Ragsdale 42
