from Today/Tonight at FNB/First National Bank Field:
Grimsley Whirlies 4, Northern Guilford Nighthawks 3
WP:Noah Christensen
LP:Kevin Willoughby
HR:Nathanael Lorczak(NG)
Whale of a Game here, and it was like of those Games of the Day/Game of the Week-type events…
Grimsley(18-4/11-2)…NG(15-6/8-5)

NG went up 3-0 in the top of the Third Inning on Nathanael Lorczak’s two-run HR, scoring Lorczak and Jason Ellis, who had reached for Northern on a well-executed bunt single…In the bottom of the third frame, Grimsley got runs from Sebastian Rodriguez and Tai Richmond and the Whirlies were back within breathing room of the NG Nighthawks…The Whirlies picked up the tying run in the bottom of the fifth inning, when they pulled of the ‘Old Fashioned’ double steal…Two on base for Grimsley, and their runner at first base broke for second, and that drew the throw toward second for the cutoff man, and then Grimsley’s runner at third base broke for the plate and Tai Richmond scores again for Grimsley, and the Richmond run ties the game all up at 3-3…
Once Grimsley’s reliever Noah Christensen came in the game, Northern had trouble getting their offense ignited…Christense(15-6/8-5)n has such a good curve/breaking ball, he is hard to hit, and he makes it hard for batters to get a good stick on his ball…When NG scored in the third inning, that was last time the Nighthawks really had a good chance to to score in the contest…They had two runners in fourth, one in the sixth, and one more in the seventh, but nobody was coming home…
In the sixth inning, that would be when Grimsley would put the “W” in Whirlies…Fly out Eli Ponder, Ground out Davis Cook, then Gabe Doolen got on, on an error and with two pinch hitters up next(Adam Takacs and Will Rainwater), Doolen scores on a pinch hit single to right field by senior Will Rainwater that got through…And that won it Grimsley, 4-3….
Winning coach Jason Simmons from Grimsley HS, said his team gutted it out…He said his Winning Pitcher Noah Christensen knows his role and that Christensen is a stud…His curveball is very nasty, and coach Simmons said Noah knows how to use location and that makes his breaking ball very effective(Christensen working from the bullpen only in 2025/No Starts)…Coach Simmons said that Will Rainwater, the pinch hitter that drove in the game-winning run, Coach said Rainwater is the “Ultimate Team Player”…Coach also said his team has been very competitive lately, as they hit the stretch run of their season…The Whirlies have won a ton of one-run games over the course of the season, and Coach Simmons said there has “Never been any panic in this team”…And he also mentioned this has been a Great Overall Season/Year…His team won their first game in Wilmington, N.C. last week after falling behind 7-0, and there was still no panic in his club…They responded and came back and won the game, 10-9…Then they turned around and beat a very good Burns team the next day, 2-1…One-run games galore, have been in store, and as long as they get the final score, and get it correct to the Whirlies advantage, that is all that matters to this team…Good having to chance to chat with Coach Jason Simmons from Grimsley, after tonight’s ballgame…
Tight game throughout…
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
Northern Guilford 1 0 2 0 0 0 0 3 5 0
Grimsley 0 0 2 0 1 1 - 4 5 3
And if there was a huge difference-maker, I would have to say it was Noah Christensen, the Grimsley pitcher, that got the Win…Clay Rosser got the start for the Grimsley Whirlies…For Rosser it was 3 Innings, 3 Runs, on 4 hits/2 BBs/4 Ks..Christensen works four innings, and allows 0 Runs/1 Hit/2 BBs/4 Ks..
Kevin Willoughby was the tough-luck losing pitcher for NG, and he went 5 2/3s Innings for the Nighthawks, allowing 4 Runs/4 Hits/4 BBs/6 Ks..
Grimsley batting:Tai Richmond 0-1/2 Runs…Gabe Doolen 1-3/Game-Winning Run…Will Rainwater 1-1/Game-Winning RBI…Sebastian Rodriguez 1-3/Run…Levi Ponder 1-3…Clay Rosser 1-3…
Northern Guilford batting:Nathanael Lorczak 1-1/HR/2 RBI/3 BBs/2 Runs…Jorge Torres 3-4…Jason Ellis 1-4/Run…Riley Gladwell 1-3…Elijah Breedlove 1-3…Caleb Hinnant 1-4…Elliot Flowers 0-2/BB…
Same two teams will meet on Friday night at Northern Guilford…Whirlies headed to the “Nighthawks’ Nest”….Be there…
