It was one of those Metro 4-A Classics tonight at Northern Guilford HS, on Spencer Dixon Road…Game was tied 0-0, going to the top of the Seventh Inning, and that is where the Grimsley Whirlies made their Conference Regular Season Title Statement…Grimsley got a single from Levi Ponder, pinch hitter Will Rainwater walked, Ponder and Rainwater both moved up, going to third(Ponder), and second(Rainwater) on a Wild Pitch, then the Grimsley Whirlies got a HUGE Double from Gabe Doolen, on a fly ball to left center field, that got in the gap, and that Doolen Double scored both Ponder and Rainwater, and Grimsley went up 2-0, on the Northern Guilford Nighthawks…Grimsley’s Adam Takacs got Hit by a Pitch, then Holden Barnwell struck out, Tai Richmond reached on a Single, then Sebastian Rodriguez got a Sacrifice Fly to center that drove in Gabe Doolen, and that put Grimsley on Top, 3-0…The Whirlies Clay Rosser struck out to close out the successful Top of the Seventh frame for the Whirlies…
Grimsley went up 3-0, after six scoreless innings, and that was one of those Metro 4-A Classics with Grimsley winning the Metro 4-A Regular Season Conference Championship…
The Grimsley Whirlies starting pitcher, LPH Jacob Benbow went the distance for the Whirlies to get the Complete-Game Shutout Victory…Benbow got NG’s Riley Gladwell, Jacob Breedlove, and Kevin Willoughby, 1-2-3 to close out the Whirlie Win in the bottom of the 7th inning…Benbow goes 7 Innings, allowing 0 Runs, on 4 Hits, with 1 BB/10 Ks…No runs, four hits, with Ten strikeouts and just one walk for the crafty Benbow in the Whirlies Win…The LHP Benbow did have one Super-Wicked Curve Ball, and he did hit one batter, but most of the night, his curve ball was bringing batters to their knees…
I’m telling you, the Northern Guilford starting pitcher, John Yarnovich was impresssive, he was just lacking the run support that Benbow was able to get…Yarnocvich gave up the Three Runs on 6 hits, with 2 BBs/8 Ks/HBP, over 6 1/3 Innings…Remember, this game was all tied up and it had been a six-inning stalemate going to the Top of the Seventh Inning, and that is where the Whirlies Went Wild…
Plus as we have been saying, This was an Old Fashioned Metro 4-A Baseball Classic…On offense, Northern Guilford did leave the Bases Loaded in the Bottom of the Third Inning…NG got an HBP(Ellis), Single(Lorczak), and BB(Torres) to load them up with one out…But, Benbow(Grimsley) took care of business, inducing a line out, and a fielder’s choice out…
We will have more game details coming your way, just a little bit later, but for now you have it….

Pretty incredible run by the Whirlies considering every game is a road game and they dont have a field to practice on. Hats off to Coach Jason Simmons!!
Just wondering, where do they practice???
It is very hard to win a baseball conference championship in the tough Metro 4-A conference. However, it is even more impressive to find a way to do it without a field to call your own. The Grasshoppers, UNCG, and other venues have been great to the Whirlies but they still have to travel for every practice and every game. Many are hopeful GCS will develop a sense of urgency to get this school a new baseball facility because they are certainly deserving.
Congratulations to Jason Simmons, Brett Garrett and the rest of the players and coaches on your Championship – your hard work and dedication has paid off! Coach Simmons and Coach Brown were high school teammates at Southern Guilford – they were winners then and their teams are winners now!
Great job – Whirlies! Good luck to all of the Metro teams in the conference tournament and state playoffs!
It is high time to push this issue. Time to get the school board stirred up on this. There has to be an answer. There is enough financial backing from those associated with the school so that GCS would not have to fund it all but land has to be identified and bought.
Way to go Whirlies and does anybody know when was the last time that Grimsley won the Conference Championship in baseball? Know that Northwest, Southwest, and Southeast have been the top teams in recent years. But when was the last time Grimsley won the Conference?
The city or the county should step up and let Grimsley play all their home games at Stoner White Stadium. Make that their home field. Nobody else is using that facility this time of year. And Grimsley could practice at Lewis Rec Center. Not being used now either, and if Grimsley did the fields upkeep themselves, what is the problem? Stoner White and Lewis and they are set. Probably makes too much sense for the city and county officials to handle. Asking too much of them and making them think and work too hard to make a decision, right? Being paid too much to do not much of nothing, and we have so many of our facilities not being used and going to waste. You build it, why not use, and put it to good use.
Again, not their idea and they want to bring in more consultants and raise our taxes so they can pay for professionals from the Think Tank. Why don’t they consult old common sense and see what he says. Again way too easy and they want to do things the hard way and expensive way. Too much red tape. Let’s cut the red tape and play some ball.
Great job Grimsley Whirlies. Now where is Grimsley going to be playing their home games at this coming week? Anybody know?
