“This is Brad Krantz on ROCK 92″…I remember those days…And then there was Brad Krantz on local WKEW AM 1400 radio…And I remember those days too…My radio show followed his radio show every day, Monday thru Friday…
Brad was on ROCK 92, with Ralph Shaw, his newsman, and then he was joined by Chris Demm on ROCK 92…Chris Demm was Brad’s newsman too…
On WKEW, Brad’s show ran from 2-6pm…Brad had among others, Bruce Bullington, Tom Jorgenson, and then Matt Pincola as his board operator’s/in studio cohorts…Brad always got the audience stirred up…He got the audience stirred up and kept them stirred up…
I do remember a time on ROCK 92, where Brad did an April Fools Day bit, where he said the water in a local city was contaminated, and the local residents should not, and could not drink the water…At WKEW, he got the older audience fired up and he had them threatening to boycott the station, and never listen again…
Like I said earlier, my sports radio show would follow Brad’s show each day, and many days if I would listen closely to Brad’s show, and come on after his show, and if he had been on any sports topics, the best thing to do was to come on with my show and take the compelte opposite stance of what Brad had been saying, and you would be guaranteed to get a good conversation going, with plenty of calls to kick off your program..Just go against what Brad said, and you could get your own stir going…And Brad didn’t care, as long as there was some sort of stir hitting the local airwaves…He was soooo good at getting the old fur flying…
Everywhere he went, he got the numbers, as in many listeners, and he always was right there on the edge with controversy running strong…
Brad Krantz was a lightning rod, and he knew what buttons to push….
After he left the Greensboro radio waves he landed with his first stint at WBT 1110 Radio in Charlotte, where he co-hosted a show with Richard Spires, and it was called the Spires and Krantz Show, and it ran in the afternoons, from 3-6pm…That show was red-hot, and lasted for about five years…
After his first run in Charlotte, Brad Krantz came back to the Triad, and he and Britt Whitmire got themselves a morning show on WZTK, which was 101.1 FM, located in Burlington….The station reached the Triad, and Brad was doing well there…But, the format didn’t last, and then Brad and Britt ended up on WSJS Radio in the afternoons, and the show was also broadcast in Raleigh on WPTF 680 AM Radio…The 101.1 FM station went Hispanic, and WSJS owned by Curtis Media, which also owned WPTF, and WSJS went all sports, and at that stage Brad and Britt were out of luck, and out of work in the Triad…
Brad and Britt got it going again on the afternoon slot, in Charlotte, at WBT 1110 Radio…Brad back at 1110 again…Their show went from 3-6pm and it was strong for a time and then the WBT management gave them “The Slip”…At one time during the incarnation of the “Brad and Britt Show”, on WBT Radio, the show was moved, and broadcast from 6-9pm…
Here what is Brad Krantz said when he was shown the door for a second time in Charlotte…
“We’d just like to thank WBT management for their complete lack of support for us from the day we came on the air.”
That would be July 2, 2012, when Krantz and Whitmire had their first day under a two-year, “no cut” contract, a fairly rare thing in broadcasting these days. It meant that if the station wanted to get rid of the show before summer 2014, they’d have to pay the pair through that time.
“They were too cheap to fire us,” says Krantz, his trademark sarcasm revving into high gear, “and put something on ‘good,’ so they decided to punish the audience with this ‘horrible’ show rather than do the right thing. For them to have taken off the cancer of ‘Brad and Britt,’ they would have had to pay out the contract. You’d think if they cared about the audience, they would do that. You know why we were still on? Because we weren’t bad. Really, we were good.”
Krantz says he believes that one key reason the show failed to resonate in Charlotte was because WBT has spent a decade aiming at arch-conservatives rather than a broader audience. Although the show was a departure from the politically focused fare that had filled the time slot over the years, Krantz says he thinks that many listeners thought he and Whitmire were too liberal for the airwaves, especially when it aired in the afternoon following Rush Limbaugh.
“We were hired to break the WBT noon-to-6 p.m. right-wing sewer that had been led by Jeff Katz, Tara Servatius and Vince Coakley,” Krantz says, listing the parade of talent WBT had in the afternoons following the 2006 departure of Jason Lewis. He was the most successful host for the time slot in at least a decade until leaving for a job in Minneapolis.
“We did that, got high ratings but got no support from management,” Krantz says. “Their core audience at WBT is like NASCAR and the Republican Party – it’s too old and too white and you can’t sell commercials to it anymore. It’s the AM talk-radio curse. They’ve done it to themselves by building the station around Limbaugh. “Tell this (exclamation that can’t be printed here) city of Charlotte, North Carolina, to (verb that can’t be printed here) off because they can’t handle anything but hate-Obama radio.”
After Charlotte, Brad and Britt did a Podcast for around 10 years…Not sure how great the Brad and Britt Podcast did, but Brad Krantz always found a way to stay near the top of the ‘Controversy Foodchain’…
Love him, or hate him, you had to respect the fact that the man knew how to stir the pot, and he knew how to keep it stirred up…
Brad Krantz is GONE, and his funeral service will be on Saturday May 10, at the Temple Emanuel Church, at 1129 Jefferson Road…Brad Krantz died today, on May 6, 2025…
RIP:Brad Krantz, and you have earned your rest, after an intense battle with Cancer since back in April of 2024….
Never bought into his view of the world but enjoyed hearing him rant and rave. RIP
One of a kind, quite the character, and just for real, he was a Radio Legend….Lots of ways to describe Brad Krantz, but he got people’s attention, and knew what buttons to push to get people fired up…He used to love to laugh at the characters that Britt Whitmire would play, like Bob Hope, Strom Thurmond, and others….Brad Krantz, 10 years at ROCK 92, and he got that station rolling…Brad was a dyed-in-the-wool Radio Man, for LIFE and now for Death…
CLICK HERE for this tribute to Brad from WBT Radio, 1110 in Charlotte, and I heard it this morning with Bo Thompson and Beth Troutman, on the Bo and Beth Morning Show, and this is good listen…If you have a few minutes, give it a listen…Gary “Boomer” Voncannon, the Traffic Guy for WBT is on there with them, and he used to work with us at WKEW, and Gary also worked for WEAL AM 1510, WQMG 97.1, and 102 Jammz and also the old WRQK/K99 FM here in town…Gary has been on Charlotte radio now for over 30 years…
It fun talking about and remembering the old radio shows and radio people…

That is the perfect way to sum up Brad. He was larger than life for many reasons. ?

Thank you for this, Andy. I can add a footnote to the WBT years: After they moved us from 3-6 to 6-9, we ended up making an additional ~$20,000 in ratings bonuses (you know, because we sucked so bad) that we never would have made had they just sent us home and paid out the contract. I like to tell ppl that we were demoted AND got a raise

Yes Sir..Brad Krantz left his mark and laid it all out, and from what I can tell, he held nothing back…To do what he did in Charlotte, and he did it twice, that is Impressive…Also, and this thought came back to me this morning, when WKEW dropped the Talk format and went to ALL Radio Disney, Brad was smart enough to hang around and collect the Radio Disney checks, until another radio job he liked came open…No on air Radio Disney work for Brad, just sales and promotions…He probably recorded and produced a few commercials in the process….Very smart move and timing on his part…And that $20,000 bonus money at Charlotte sounds real good too…

Great discussion of Brad’s career, Andy. Brad is definitely on the Mt. Rushmore of Greensboro Radio Personalities along with yourself and a few others.

On that Mount Rushmore don’t forget that along with Brad you need to include Bob Poole and his sidekick Willie, plus Rick Dees, and Alfred G. Richards…Bob and Willie as one slot, then Rick, Alfred G., and Brad…If we have a Hall of Fame then there must be a spot for DJ Oh Boy, from WQFS/Guilford College radio…
More from that FB discussion….

Great History and sad for the loss to the community and his family and friends, of which you are clearly one….
Again, lots of fun to talk about the people that made radio history, and the history of radio/radio shows…
