We have lost a Local Legend: Former Baseball Player, Baseball Coach, and Community Leader gone at age 70, as Greensboro loses Louis Allen

We have lost a Local Legend: Louis Allen

He played baseball for the Smith Golden Eagles, he coached youth baseball teams in Greensboro, and he helped a lot of kids in his community here in Greensboro…Louis Allen, loved and remembered by many here in Greensboro, and he left us this weekend at age 70…

Had been battling cancer according to his long time friend from the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department, Don Tilley….Louis Allen good friends with others from the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department, including Phil Hardin and Tom Shalley…

Louis Allen used to run many of the softball and baseball programs at the Carolyn Allen Fields, out off of Drawbridge Parkway…That was in addition to his regular day job…Louis Allen was always out there helping out in the community, and he was a great friend to many a youth baseball player…

Louis Allen attended Dudley High School in his freshman and sophomore years in high school, and then he was switched over to Ben L. Smith High School, and he graduated as a Smith Golden Eagle….

Don Tilley was in high school with Louis Allen over at Smith HS, and Don told us on Saturday night that Louis Allen was one of his best friends ever….As Don said, Louis Allen was a friend to all, and he would be there to help anyone…Allen had many friends from over the years here in Greensboro, and we picked up on just a few of his friend’s comments below, and share them from a couple of Facebook posts…

Louis Allen, gone but not forgotten, and we offer our Thoughts and Prayers to his family here this evening/early morning….

RIP:Louis Allen, and thanks again for the time you spent serving your community in many different capacities, and for all the years you spent coaching Youth Baseball, here in the Gate City….He sure hepled a lot a whole bunch of kids in the community, and throughout the neighborhoods…

Some of those comment coming in, from over at the Facebook pages…….

Thank you for your many years of caring for our youth, attending the fields, and always a champion of service to our community!

  3. Wow! This one really hurts. Louis Allen a I, along with both our families have been friends for over 60 years. As kids, we would play three sports just about each day, football, basketball, but especially baseball, which was our favorite. Always a left hand batter and always a leadoff batter and outfielder with exceptional speed. Always respectful and always stayed in touch throughout our many years of brotherhood. RIH Louis, God has a new leadoff batter…
