Raleigh, NC – I heard today, that Chuck Coates had died of post-surgery complications early Monday morning. It saddens me to see this good soul leave us so soon.

I had the opportunity to have a brief conversation with Chuck back in 2023 at the ACC Wrestling Tournament in Raleigh at the Reynolds Coliseum. Chuck, a three-time cancer survivor and former professional wrestler, shared a little bit about his remarkable journey from the wrestling ring to his role at the Durham Rescue Mission. With a career spanning decades and a passion for helping others, Coates exemplified resilience and faith, reminding us that life’s battles extend beyond the mat. His story serves as an inspiration to many, illustrating how one can overcome life’s challenges and make a positive impact in the community.

The Wrestling Legacy of Chuck Coates
Chuck Coates is more than just a name in the wrestling community; he is a living testament to perseverance and faith. Chuck’s’ wrestling journey began at North Carolina State University (NC State) in the mid-1980s. “I was part of the intramural wrestling league, which is where I started my career,” Coates recounted. His passion for the sport was ignited by his father, a devoted wrestling fan, who introduced him to the world of professional wrestling. Coates quickly became enamored with the sport, leading him to pursue a professional wrestling career after leaving college. Trained by Nelson Royal in 1987, Coates went on to compete in the WWF and WCW, sharing the ring with legends like Andre the Giant, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Ricky Steamboat.

Despite the glamour of professional wrestling, Coates’ journey has not been without its challenges. His career was interrupted by a life-threatening battle with cancer that began in 2006. “I had a bout with lymphoma, and it was a tough road,” he admitted. Yet, his resilience shone through as he faced cancer not once, but three times, ultimately emerging as a survivor. “I believe in miracles,” Coates stated firmly, attributing his survival to divine intervention and a strong faith.

A New Chapter: Giving Back Through the Durham Rescue Mission
After retiring from wrestling, Coates found purpose in a new arena: the Durham Rescue Mission. This nonprofit organization serves as a homeless shelter, providing support and resources for individuals and families in need. “I took a job there last year, and it’s been incredibly rewarding,” Coates explained. His role involves encouraging and supporting both men and women who are battling addiction, homelessness, and other life challenges. “It’s refreshing to see lives change for the better,” he said, emphasizing the importance of community and compassion.

Coates’ work at the Durham Rescue Mission is not just a job; it’s a calling. “When your heart’s in it, it’s not work,” he reflected. His experience as a cancer survivor fueled his desire to help others, particularly those facing their own battles. “I want to make a difference,” he asserted, underscoring the significance of his mission to uplift and empower those around him.

Faith as a Foundation
A significant aspect of Coates’ journey is his unwavering faith. Raised in a Christian household, he credited his grandmother for instilling the values of faith and community service in him from a young age. “There were no questions asked; we went to church,” he recalled fondly. However, during his wrestling career, Coates admits he lost sight of his spiritual path. It wasn’t until his cancer diagnosis that he turned back to his faith for strength and guidance.

“Walking by faith, not by sight,” he emphasized, quoting a biblical principle that has become central to his life. Coates believes that his survival and ability to help others are part of a greater purpose. “I’m just a vessel,” he said humbly, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to share his story and inspire others to find hope in their struggles.

The Power of Wrestling: A Community of Support
Wrestling has played a pivotal role in Coates’ life, serving as both a passion and a source of community. He reflects on the camaraderie and support he experienced during his time at NC State, where the wrestling culture fostered strong bonds among athletes. “Wrestling is on the rise in the South,” he noted, pointing to the growing popularity of the sport and its ability to bring people together.

As he watched the ACC Wrestling Tournament unfold, Coates was filled with pride for his alma mater. “NC State has come a long way,” he said, noting the impressive turnout of fans and the success of the team. “It’s exciting to see so many people passionate about wrestling.”

Life Lessons Learned Through Adversity
Through his experiences, Coates has learned valuable life lessons about resilience, faith, and the importance of giving back. He emphasizes the need for compassion and understanding, particularly for those who may be struggling with addiction or homelessness. “We all have our battles,” he reminded us, urging others to approach life with empathy and kindness.

Coates’ journey had also taught him the significance of cherishing each day. “Cancer slowed me down and made me appreciate life,” he reflected. With a renewed perspective, he encourages others to seize opportunities for growth and connection. “Enjoy every day,” he advised, emphasizing the importance of living life to the fullest.

Conclusion: A Legacy of Hope and Encouragement
As Chuck Coates prepared to watch the wrestling finals at the ACC Tournament, he embodies the spirit of resilience and hope. His journey from the wrestling ring to the Durham Rescue Mission illustrates the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of others. “I’m still living, still loving, and just trying to give back and do what I can to make a difference,” he concluded, a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to service.

Through his experiences, Coates inspires us to confront our challenges with courage, embrace our passions, and extend a helping hand to those in need. His story serves as a reminder that, no matter the obstacles we face, we have the power to rise above and make a meaningful impact in the world around us.

We’ll miss you, Chuck. God bless!
