Friday Football Finish with Southeast Guilford Falcons going “Old School” and running the ball and the clock with ‘Ball Control’, and in some games Tonight, “We Didn’t See That Coming”!!!

The Southeast Guilford Falcons(4-2/1-0) over the Eastern Guilford Wildcats(3-3/0-1) in a very tight Conference Battle tonight, down at the Tommy Grayson Stadium, in Gibsonville…

Southeast Guilford going “Old School Football” by keeping the ball on the ground on Offense, and with their running backs moving forward, plus the clock was moving at the same time, and once Southeast Guilford moved in front in this contest they were ready to take the victory, with Caleb Jackson, Travis Motley, and Joshua Williams-Hatten all running for key yards, on key carries to put the SEG Falcons on top to stay, and with that clock moving, Southeast was able to lock down the win…

We will come back to this game, but as for the games where “We Didn’t See That Coming”, how about that 26-20 win by Page in Overtime??? I didn’t see that coming…Maybe Page was in some sort of letdown mode after last week’s loss at Dudley…Some how, some way, the Pirates were able to survive and pull this game out…Congrats to Page on the victory, but boy they sure made it tough, and this one was way too close…Had to re-write this portion of my post because early returns on the TV Highlights shows, were showing Ragsdale winning, but with Page finding some way to pull this one off, it makes everybody’s Saturday different…Thanks to the Page Fan who alerted the site to the fact that Page was the WINNER, and we got our junk together, and got the score and our post updated, but this makes for some exciting late night action here at GreensboroSports.com…It is a good thing we are not a print edition, and we have the access to go back and edit the info and get posts in order…Page Surives an Overtime Scare from the Ragsdale Tigers…That can be your featured headline for this Saturday morning…I remember about 5 years ago, reports came out that the Western Guilford Hornets had knocked off the Page Pirates, and then Page assistant coach Baldwin put the word out, that Page had won that game too, and they did, and we got that one straight too…Must be some conspiracy people out there trying to get Page into the L file…Not sure who sent that word to FOX 8, but they had it on their Friday Football Frenzy, that Ragsdale had defeated Page, in OT…Well, let’s hit the bed, and get ready for the Saturday Morning Rewind…We paid our dues tonight, with all that we were able to write/post…Rewind time coming soon…Another crazy Friday night is in the books…The drama thread contiues to run on, and who knows what next week will lay at our feet…I think we must be writing history, and we sure are writing a lot…Time to get the heck out of dodge, and see if that old bed is still ready to take us home…

Not sure if we all saw it coming, but to see Grimsley get tested like they did, was probably a good thing…The Whirlies get the “W”, but boy, it was close…Greensboro Grimsley wins it, 21-14, over the Blue Devils from Varina, a school from up near Richmond, Virginia…Grimsley got what they were looking for, a real hard-earned win, a super test, as they get ready to get deeper into conference play…Grimsley currently at (2-0) in the Conference, after wins over Southwest Guilford, 65-0, and over Western Guilford, 66-6…That 21-14 game must look like some sort of important Mid-Term Exam to many Whirlie followers…Key test to begin the season with the OT finish against West Charlotte, and now a mid-season challenge from Varina, and later in the year, by say the third or fourth round of the playoffs, Grimsley will be sternly tested again, but probably not until that point of the 2025 season, will Grimsley be forced to breathe real hard…So far Grimsley out-scoring their Conference opponents, 131-6…But, it was lot different in the West Charlotte and Varina games…Grimsley needs tests like these to make them a complete football team…And so far even with at least two tight games on their schedule, Grimsley has won all of their games for this season…

Another one of those “I Really Didn’t See That Coming Games”, from tonight/Friday October 3, would be the Smith at Dudley game…Dudley takes it over the Smith Golden Eagles, 34-23…The Dudley Panthers winning is not the surprise, the real eye-opening part of seeing that score, is that the game was close…Can’t remember the last time Dudley and Smith had a close ballgame…An eleven-point difference, and all things considered, that is a pretty close football game, by Dudley and Smith standards…Is Smith that much improved, or is Dudley down and working their way back in full Dudley Panthers football gear??? Smith is showing the capability to be in games, and even though to some, it might just seem like it is all cosmetic, to many, they see Smith being able to battle again, and Smith with the ability to make almost all of their games interesting…

Maybe our last game in the collection of those high school football games of where you find yourself saying at time even repeatedly, “I Sure Didn’t See That Coming”…To me, the final score of 31-27, in favor of Northern Guilford over Asheboro, that game sort of gets me wondering and thinking about it…Did we really think Asheboro was for REAL??? We all saw the Blue Comets (5-0) record, and some of us found ourseleves saying and thinking that the Northern Guilford Nighthawks should be able to put A’boro away early, and NG should have topped the Blue Comets by at least two TDs or MORE…Nope, this turns out to be a Four-Point ballgame…Northern has passed several key tests this season, but no test was any more important than this WIN by the NG Nighthawks, over the Asheboro Blue Comets…Northern needed this game badly, so they could continue to assert themselves to become the top team in their 6-A/5-A Triad Conference…Northern needed this game sooooo bad…If NG slipped vs. A’boro, then the Nighthawks would be back at the drawing board…Game One of Conference Play, and NG is at (1-0), with (1-0) Conference foe, the Northeast Guilford Rams coming out to the Johnny Roscoe Stadium next Friday night, to challenge the NG Nighthawks…NG and NEG are both right at (5-1) overall….Again, a mighty big Conference Encounter, with the Northeast Guilford Rams, coming to see the Northern Guilford Nighthawks next Friday night….

So, Ragsdale at Page, Varina at Grimsley, Smith at Dudley, and Northern Guilford at Asheboro, all were closer than what we envisioned for Friday night…

There is no surprise that Southeast Guilford at Eastern Guilford game was as close as it was…This was one of those Backyard Battles, bringing together two teams, that have experienced success on the football field, over the past 5 years…Both of these schools have been in State Championship Games over the past 10 years…They did it, and now they are intent on getting back there again…

Here is how that SEG at EG went tonight, as we look back at the Touchdown Tally….
(Courtesy of Coach Randy Norris.)
6:24 First Quarter:Eastern Guilford’s Marcus Iheakam kicks a 19-yard Field Goal to put EG on top, 3-0…
34.7 Seconds left in the First Quarter:Southeast Guilford’s Caleb Jackson scores on a 42-yard TD run…The PAT Kick by Jaxson Kinderman is Good….SEG moves in front, 7-3…
End of First Quarter:SEG 7, EG 3
10:25 Second Quarter:EG gets a 16-yard Touchdown toss from the EG QB Javion Majette to Evan Burns, and the Marcus Iheakam Kick is Good…EG on top of SEG, 10-7…
End of First Half:Eastern Guilford 10, Southeast Guilford 7
10:35 Third Quarter:Joshua Williams-Hatten scores on a 1-yard TD carry for SEG, but the Kinderman kick is No Good…Southeast Guilford retakes the lead, as they are on top of Eastern Guilford, 13-10…
End of Third Quarter:SEG 13, EG 10
Final Score:Southeast Guilford 13, Eastern Guilford 10

Travis Motley was the leading rusher for the SEG Falcons, Caleb Jackson was their #2 rusher, and the Falcons also got yardage on the ground from Joshua Williams-Hatten…SEG started with Jayden Graves at QB, but moved to Phoenix Fleming as their quarterback, and Fleming was back at QB for the most part of the ballgame…SEG QB just needed to hand off the football to the Falcon running backs and then sit back see how many yards they could gain…Motley would take off running left, and get behind his big Offensive Tackle Micah Martin, and Motley was going to be good for 7-8 yards per carry…The M&M Express, with Martin leading Motley into the holes, it made for some very tight but productive running lanes in this football game….Southeast Guilford had the ball, they grabbed the lead in the second half, and with the Lead, the Ball, and the Clock moving, the SEG Falcons were in great shape, and looking for a key conference victory…Again, that M&M Express with Motley following Martin, was very impressive…Equally impressive, was the Defensive Havoc being caused by LBs Amir Lyles and Terrance Norwood…They were slipping into the EG Wildcats offensive backfield, and leaving their mark on the outcome of this contest…

Top Players of the Game for SEG were, Motley, Martin, Norwood, Lyles, and SEG had to like the job Joshua Williams-Hatten was doing as a backup running back, and Williams-Hatten was stepping up, when SEG RB Caleb Jackson went down with an injury right around the 10:40 mark of the Third Quarter…Williams-Hatten had been playing all DB for SEG, but did the Next-Man-Up step up, and he gave Southeast Guilford a key boost at running back, that the Falcons really needed…

Eastern Guilford got very good work and solid production from their junior QB Javion Majette and I thought Majette really looked good back there running the show for EG…Majette was going upfield, and he had a very active and dependable target in Keyvon Haynes…Haynes found ways to get open all night long…Majette missed him a couple of times, but overall Haynes was the money-ball receiver for the EG Wildcats…Evan Burns caught the EG TD pass from Majette, and Burns was also a primary target for EG QB Majette…Chance Patton gave Majette one more receiving option, and Majette made the most it, by connecting with Patton on key pass plays…Patton had one sideline route, where he pulled in the pass on the money, but the offcial later ruled he was out-of-bounds on the catch…

EG RB Tyler Whaley-Melvin was never really able to get running downhill, as most of this game became an uphill battle for him and his ‘Cats…One big problem for EG was, that the Wildcats couldn’t get the SEG Falcons offense off of the football field…SEG would get possession of the pigskin, and the Falcons would not give that ball up…Looked like SEG had a major advantage in this game, when it came to Time of Possession….SEG might have had the ball, double the time EG had it…SEG would just get their hands on the football, and would not give it up…SEG would grab the lead, then get the ball, and that clock would be running nearly non-stop…

Again, really do like the progression of EG QB Javion Majette, plus the work turned in by his receiver, Keyvon Haynes…Haynes at WR, and LB Samari Smith would have to Player of the Game candidates for the EG Wildcats…EG punter Caden Nelson gave Eastern Guilford a steady weapon in the kicking game…His boots were very helpful for Eastern Guilford, and he played it steady, with his kicks/punts booming all night long…PAT/FG/Kickoff Man, Marcus Iheakam hepled the Wildcats with his continuous KO boots that sailed toward the end zone….

Excellent Game to get Southeast Guilford and Eastern Guilford both up and running with Conference Play…This game will show both teams things what they need to work on, and it will also give them both an indication on how much time they will need to spend on certain game situations…

Next Week it is Southern Guilford(2-4) at Eastern Guilford(3-3) and Asheboro(5-1) at Southeast Guilford(4-2)….Plus Ragsdale(1-5) at Grimsley(6-0), Northeast Guilford(5-1) at Northern Guilford(5-1), Dudley(4-3) at Western Guilford(5-2) and MORE….

1 thought on “Friday Football Finish with Southeast Guilford Falcons going “Old School” and running the ball and the clock with ‘Ball Control’, and in some games Tonight, “We Didn’t See That Coming”!!!”

  1. Wow-what a game at at Jamison Stadium between Grimsley and visiting Varina from Virginia! Varina came into Greensboro on Thursday and practiced at A and T in prep for the powerhouse matchup. Varina ranked fifth in the state of Virginia (and there are a lot of good teams in Virginia), battled the top ranked team in North Carolina. Tied at 14 at halftime, both defenses tightened up in the second half, and was decided late in the fourth quarter as Grimsley held off the last drive by Varina on their fourth down to take a knee on the last play to seal the win 21-14 in front of a great home crowd. Wish I had the stat lines to show what a great game this was. Well worth it to go see that Grimsley Whirlie team roll!
