Rockingham County Review, Week Eight | Reidsville drops Morehead; Rockingham County demolishes Bartlett Yancey; McMichael put away by Carver

This Friday around the Rock, Reidsville dropped Morehead in county rivalry action, 55-0, Rockingham County demolished Bartlett Yancey, 54-15, and Carver put away McMichael, 60-26.

The McMichael Fighting Phoenix simply gave up too many points in a 74-32 loss to the Carver Yellow Jackets. This matchup, which took place in Mayodan, was their second home conference loss in two weeks. They are now 29 days removed from their last win, and the road does not get any easier next Friday night, as they take on the Walkertown Wolfpack.

Morehead was riding high after back-to-back one point wins over conference rivals. However, Reidsville sent them crashing back down to earth with a 55-0 blowout in the Football Capital of North Carolina. Morehead, who came into this game ranked second in the conference, falls to .500 in conference play and tied for fourth. The Panthers are now 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Panthers will take a bye before closing out their season against Rockingham County and Walkertown.

Reidsville’s winning ways continue, and their scoring ways continue as well. They have now hung 40 or more points on each of their past five opponents during this win streak. Their remaining schedule consists of Bartltett Yancey, a bye week, McMichael, so they could keep this streak going into the 4A Playoffs.

Up in the county seat, the Rockingham County Cougars took care of the Bartlett Yancey Buccaneers, 54-15. The Cougars are now 3-4 overall, 2-1 in the conference, and looking ahead to a pivotal Carver game on October 17th. It was thought before the scheduled Walkertown game that that would be the game to tell us what we needed to know about Rockingham County, but unfortunately, that game was cancelled due to rain. Thankfully, we have this matchup to be the one to tell us about these RCHS Cougars as we approach the final weeks before the playoffs.

After Reidsville’s win over Morehead, they have essentially locked up the Mid-State Conference aside from some implausible outcomes. However, the only teams formally eliminated from Mid-State competition are Bartlett Yancey and McMichael. Furthermore, Morehead’s only route to the title is one in which they get a share of the crown as co-champions. Carver, Rockingham County, and Walkertown are all one loss conference teams, but they have already taken their shot at Reidsville and fallen short. It’s the gold-and-navy’s to lose, and here are the Mid-State Conference standings after week eight.

1. Reidsville – 4-0 conference (6-2 overall)

T2. Carver – 2-1 conference (6-1 overall)

T2. Rockingham County – 2-1 conference (3-4 overall)

T4. Morehead – 2-2 conference (2-6 overall)

T4. Walkertown – 1-1 conference (5-1 overall)

T6. Bartlett Yancey – 0-3 conference (1-6 overall)

T6. McMichael – 0-3 conference (2-5 overall)

Next Friday in the Mid-State, Morehead will take a break from the carousel. The Reidsville Rams will look to officially lock up at least a share of the Mid-State 3A/4A/5A championship when they face Bartlett Yancey next week, McMichael will continue their search for conference win number one when they travel to Wolfpack Stadium to take on Walkertown, and Carver and Rockingham County will each compete for a pivotal, high-quality win in week nine.
