Spartan Dining Presents Battle of the Chefs in Partnership with Greensboro Gargoyles and Greensboro Swarm
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Spartan Dining at UNC Greensboro is excited to announce the return of Battle of the Chefs, a live culinary competition that will bring together three of UNCG’s athletic teams in a high-energy showcase of skill, creativity, and flavor. This year’s event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. in Fountain View Dining Hall, UNC Greensboro.
For the first time, Spartan Dining is partnering with both the Greensboro Gargoyles hockey team and the Greensboro Swarm basketball team, two professional sports organizations committed to fueling community spirit in Greensboro. The Gargoyles’ inaugural season runs from October–April, and the team’s presence is already building excitement across the region. “Partnering with the Gargoyles and Swarm gives us the opportunity to bring together students, athletes, and the broader Greensboro community in a way that celebrates competition, creativity, and connection,” said Des St. Cyr, Marketing Manager with UNCG’s Spartan Dining.
How the Competition Works
This year’s Battle of the Chefs will put three of UNCG’s athletic teams—Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, and Men’s Tennis—to the test in the kitchen. Each team will be paired with a Spartan Dining chef, but with a twist: The chefs are not allowed to cook or touch the food. Instead, it’s up to the student-athletes to prepare a full menu inspired by a theme revealed live at the event. A panel of judges, including team coaches; special guest judge Casey Ditzel, broadcaster for the Greensboro Gargoyles; and a guest judge from the Greensboro Swarm, will sample each dish and cast their votes. The team with the top score will walk away with bragging rights, a feature spotlight in Spartan Dining promotions, complimentary tickets from the Greensboro Gargoyles to their next home game, and tickets from the Greensboro Swarm to their season-opening match on Nov. 7.
Looking Ahead
Following Battle of the Chefs, the celebration continues with Monster Mash, the Greensboro Gargoyles’ Halloween-themed game night on Saturday, Oct. 25. At 7 p.m., the Gargoyles will take the ice at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro for a night of festive fun, spooky energy, and community spirit. This back-to-back weekend of food and sports showcases the strong connection between UNCG and the city’s growing professional sports scene.
