How do they determine who in the East and west? Strange that Eastern, Northeast, and Andrews are the only teams from around this way in the east
The NCHSAA never gives a very good determination on how they draw the lines and the variables about who goes East and who goes West…Have not seen where any teams from our Guilford County have gone East in recent years, until now…It is almost like they are just trying to fill out the brackets and so be it…
Not sure how the higher seeded #15 White Oak team ends up coming to #18 Eastern Guilford either???
Did a double-check on the EG-White Oak game at NCHSAA site, NCHSAA.org, and they now have it as #18 White Oak at #15 Eastern Guilford and maybe they had it wrong earlier, or we could have read it wrong…
Just so many Byes in Round One….Should not be ANY Byes in Round One….Too many team classifications and too many teams making the playoffs…It just doesn’t make sense to see teams with just one or two wins getting in, and even if a team has a losing record, should they be in the playoffs??? Playoffs should be reward for having a great season, and this will continue to be the great debate…Should teams with losing records be in the playoffs??? The way it has started to unfold, and with the way they are setting things up, and I say this very sarcasticly, Maybe Every Team in the state of North Carolina should be in the playoffs…
Maybe I am just an old disgruntled veteran of the high school football playoffs shaft…My old teams went 7-2-1, 6-3-1, and 7-3 and never got in the playoffs…In my old days, the Conference Champ got in, and that was IT…We finished second in the Conference in back-to-back seasons, losing our last game of the season, to the eventual State Champions, and back in that, those Champs were the local Ragsdale Tigers…I have been there and done that, and don’t have a lot to show for it, other than a totally deflated/bruised ego…
At least when you hear me talking or see me writing all these posts and comments, you can know, I have been there and done that, even if it all sort of came out flat…
From Highschoolot.com in regards to the East/West split:
This year, the playoffs will be seeded by RPI only. If a team wins a head-to-head matchup, it is not guaranteed to be seeded above that opponent.
In the 8A playoffs, eight teams will receive a first round bye (four in the West region and four in the East region). In the 1A through 7A playoffs, 16 teams will receive a first round bye (eight in the West region and eight in the East region). The teams that will receive the byes will be the teams with the highest RPI in each region.
Conference finish no longer matters for playoff qualification or seeding. Previously, all conference champions were guaranteed a spot in the bracket and were automatically seeded before every wildcard team. There were more convoluted restrictions for teams belonging to split conferences as well.
The RPI formula has been changed this year. Previously, the formula was RPI = (0.3 x a team’s own winning percentage) + (.4 x the combined winning percentage of a team’s direct opponents) + (0.3 x the combined winning percentage of the opponents of a team’s direct opponent).
Now, the RPI formula is RPI = (0.4 x WP) + (0.4 x OWP) + (0.2 x OOWP). This change came after coaches requested that their team’s own performance matter more or equal to the performance of the teams they play and matter more than the performance of teams they don’t play.
Another key factor with the new playoff system is that the static East-West line has been removed. During the last four years, every team entered the season knowing which region it would play in if it made the postseason.
These schools will always be West or East in the new NCHSAA playoff system
The divide between the East and West regions will fluctuate based on which teams qualify by RPI and which teams don’t. The NCHSAA uses the longitude of each school location to determine which side of the bracket it will end up on. When the top 48 (or 24 teams) are selected via RPI, the NCHSAA will put each team in order by longitude and then split the group into two halves.
Here’s a simplified version of everything you just read:
The New NCHSAA Playoff Process, Simplified
Take the top 48 teams by RPI in a classification (this number is 24 in 8A). These are the teams that have qualified for the state playoffs.
Order the RPI-qualified teams from west to east by longitude
Split the longitude-ordered list in half, creating the West and the East regions
Re-sort each of the two regions by top RPI to worst. The new ranking makes the bracket seeds.
The top four teams from each region in 8A will receive a first round bye. The top eight teams per region in 1A through 7A will receive a bye. In 8A, the 1-seed will face the winner of the 8 vs. 9 matchup, the 2-seed will face the winner of the 7 vs. 10 matchup, and so on. In 1A through 7A, the 1-seed will face the winner of the 16 vs. 17 matchup, and the 2-seed will face the winner of the 15 vs. 18 matchup, and so on.
It’s gonna take about 10 years to learn and make THAT new system simple….By that time they will be going back to the old/formerly used system…I guess you can’t argue with a computer output, and we must adhere and pay homage to the RPI…The RPI, the PTI, FBI, the CIA, they all have us beconing to their call…
You can thank Sen. Leghorn in Anson County and Berger King in Rockingham County for this new f’ed up playoff format. Que Tucker & Co. we’re far from perfect, but ever since the legislative clowns hijacked the NCHSAA it’s been a total s–t show. They can’t run state government worth a s–t, but they want to meddle in high school sports…
The last 4 years were different, as they pre-determined what schools are East and West. But before that, is the same way it was done this year and into the future. They put the qualifying teams into the field and then line them up based on Longitude line and split them in half. For example, in 4AA for many years Page went West, but in 2015 Page went into the East bracket based on the qualifying teams. The Page Pirates played Lumberton, Wake Forest, Richmond County, Middle Creek, before eventually meeting Mallard Creek in the State Final.
What a joke. How can the NCHSAA justify putting teams in the playoffs with 1, 2 or 3 wins?
As I went through these brackets, it is becoming quite clear that the “Computer Model” or RPI system will need a tweak before next season. As foreshadowed on this site and others, removing the human element was going to be a mistake. Add onto the fact we went from 4 to 8 conferences and this was bound to happen. Head-to-head match-ups did not have any impact on seeding. Perfect example: West Forsyth (8-2) wins the conference by beating Reagan (8-2) 35-0, yet it is Reagan that gets the first round bye?
How does the expanded playoffs affect athletes that play a winter sport especially wrestling I went to high school in another state and playoffs didn’t go that far into winter sports
Keep playing football and transition to your other sport as soon as football is over…When some wrestling teams have tons of football players on the wrestling team, they will work to delay the start of the wrestling matches after football is finished…Get your light weights into practice mode and pick up the other guys once football is finished…Some don’t do that, and they go ahead and start wrestling season up, and go with what you have….
