My former student at Vandalia Christian School, and a true friend for life, and now gone way too soon, at just 57 years old…We remember John Walker, he was “The Man and The Legend”…Great radio friend from over the years, and he broke the record for the Longest On-Air Radio Shift Ever…175 hours and I sat in with him for a few hours that week on WUAG 103.3, at UNCG…I taught John back in school from grades 8-12…Great memories and he will be missed by all that knew him….
RIP:John E. Walker
John Keith Walker Obituary
Mr. John Keith Walker, 57, of Oak Ridge, North Carolina passed away on January 17, 2026.
Funeral Services WERE held at 1:00 pm on January 22, 2026, at Shining Light Baptist Church. The burial will be at the church cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends following the service.
Being born and raised in Greensboro, NC, John was a proud native. As the baby, he was one of four boys, and truly loved his family. He was raised in the Church and was a man of strong faith and lived by his love for the Lord and Jesus Christ. He grew up attending Shining Light Baptist Church and graduated from Vandalia Christian School.
Taking after his father, he entered the world of insurance, and by the time he was in his 20s, he already owned his own auto insurance agency. Over the years, he was known as the coolest and most down to earth, unbiased insurance agent one would ever meet. Through his years as an insurance agent, he came across all walks of life and, being so open-minded, he could talk to anyone as if he had known them for years. He had a fascinating love for music, especially music from the 80s, which was a time he referred to as the best time to be a teenager with such amazing music. With the love for music and the gift of such a beautiful voice, he was enthralled with the world of radio, especially college radio. After many years djing at WKFS at Guilford College, he went on the dj at many clubs and events, notably the Club Fifth Season at the Sheraton Koury Convention Center. He was so great on the radio, that he even went on to attempt to break a world record for the longest radio show. John was so well-spoken, he even ran for office on the City Council for the City of Greensboro. With a love for so many things, in 2015, he even won Greensboro’s News and Record’s Holiday Cookie Contest with a delicious Indian-inspired Nankathai cookie.
John always had a story about life happenings. One thing is for sure, these stories were all funny and would bring you to laughter beyond a chuckle, to a good belly laugh. Whether it was a radio interview he did with some of the top music entertainers, insurance people, Food Lion runs, QVC calls, WWE or even his infamous prank calls, John kept his life free-flowing, with a story to bring you a smile, day to day. He believed in living life with a smile rather than a frown. He believed in the art of living and would encourage those around him to live the same way.
Throughout his life, John was always a giver, whether it was to his family or even to his clients. He was always there for people, as a dutiful son, a supportive brother, a loving father and an amazing husband. His time on this earth was not nearly as long as it should have been, but he has and will continue to have an amazing influence on those in his world.
In the Bible, the number 17 symbolizes complete victory and overcoming enemies, derived from combining perfect numbers 10 (completeness/divine order) and 7 (spiritual perfection). Key examples include Noah’s Ark, resting on the 17th day (signifying new life after judgement) and Jesus’ resurrection on Nisan 17 (victory over death). It also relates to divine purpose, as seen with Joseph (set apart at age 17) and establishment of Aaron’s priesthood in Numbers 17, confirming God’s will.
John is survived by his wife, Sheetal Walker; children, Aidan Walker, Aasha Walker and Armaan Walker; parents, Douglas and Mary Walker; brothers, Robert Walker and Edwin Walker and a host of other extended family and friends.

John Walker has broken the record for longest running DJ air shift going for the 175 hours as of 11:30am Monday morning. John will complete his radio marathon at 1pm today, Monday August 13, 2007 and he has made history.
John officially broke the record back on Saturday morning at 11am and now he is in the process of shattering the record for longest running radio air shift.
Johnny Walker will close out is radio marathon at 103.1 WUAG, the UNCG campus station, this afternoon at 1pm. If you missed it then you lost out on history and it was made right here in your own backyard.
I spread the word about all these local activities and many of you miss them because your are too lazy to jump on board the train. As the man dying from ALS said on TV last Sunday, this is not a dress rehearsal, this is the real thing. If you want to get something done in life you better get to work, if you want to come up empty, just stand back and watch.
For John Walker who just broke the record and now is setting a standard that might never be touched, Johnny for a few days, Rest in Peace. RIP, John Walker, and way to go on breaking that WORLD RECORD. We throw a few kudos along to Jack Boney the program director/station manager at WUAG 103.1 and to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for hosting this history-making event.
The old record 125 hours non-stop, the new record belongs to John Walker:175 hours non-stop Radio Marathon.

What do you mean we miss it? Miss what? Did they sell tickets to this thing or something? It’s just a stunt. It’s not 1950. This kind of thing isn’t very impressive.
And what guy on TV with ALS? Lou Gehrig? Once again, it’s not 1950. We’re not all watching the same TV station. You might want to be a little more specific.

Wow, WAUG is still on the air. Was he actually trying to break the record or did UNCG just not have anybody slotted for all those hours? I’ll give the guy some huge props for going that distance, but have to wonder if a real radio station would not be a better venue for gimmick of this type. Regardless, I hope this guy gets home and sleeps for a few days.

Commercial radio stations would not give up their money time to let someone come in and try to break this type of record. WUAG is the one and they have picked up many new listeners during the past week. The other stations are in it for the Buck only and WUAG realizes this type of event helpled put them on the map. The regular DJ’s were coming in and they wanted their shifts back but Jack at 103.1 was committed to this effort and so was Greensborosports.com. You have to set a goal and stay with it and that’s what John Walker did. I was at the station today and we picked this guy up and carried him on our back and he was very appreciative. WUAG is a real radio station, it’s just a student run community station and John Walker was representing the community. Great idea and I commend him for his success. When I make a call to back this type of effort it is a gutsy move but some times you have to go for it and this time it paid off. John is about the music not the publicity. The TV stations were using him to get viewers(look at this crazy man) not John going for the lights, camera, and the action. At the end there were no TV stations at WUAG, it was just the people who have been supporting John over the past week, many who have come over to greensborosports.com to express their support.
It’s all about taking up a cause and leading the way and that’s what John did. The other UNCG students were jealous in some ways but they knew they could never pull off what John did. I have gone into detail explaining this but you the readers need to know that greensborosports.com has once again rode along and been part of a major event at no charge to the readers and you all are better for it.

Eh I’d say there weren’t any tv stations there because all the decision makers in tv news are still enrolled at other colleges working for their degrees. And they have UNCG Envy. ?

There are soo many people that are jealous of John Walker because he is famous. When I first heard about this record I thought it would be easy but after I did the math I found out this is soo tough how could a normal person do this. You have to be into the musxic and have the heart. John has it the rest of us don’t, Johnny has the record and everyboday else is on the outside looming in. Rock on with Rockin’ Ray Ramone.

Did anyone else see that this guy is 39 years old? That’s amazing. I hope he can turn this into a big gig with a real station for the next half of his life.
I remember WQFS used to have a couple of clowns on Sunday afternoons. DJ Oboy and Dr. D. Those guys were the epitome of college radio. John Walker is too good for this venue.

Kudos to John E. At least there’s one person in this stinkin’ town who’s willing to get off their lazy duff and TRY something different. Too many of us are simply plopped on our couches, stuffing our faces with toxins (i.e, chips, pizzas, greaseburgers, etc.), playing critic or Monday morning QB. John E proves that there’s still room for the “crackpot” with a dream, who has the gumption to make it happen! Old you say? 39? Same age as me. Hell, that’s nothin’. To quote the Carpenters: “We’ve only just begun.” You go, John. Waitin’ for your next adventure …

Is this the same John Walker who used to ROCK WQFS, i remember back in 1989 and the 90’s that him another guy had a show called DARK THUNDER, metal, it was awesome. If this was him, and someone can get him and the other guy back on the radio to have a show, that would be great.
Rock on , and Congrats…

Johnnie Walker whisky is promoted with the tagline “Keep on Walking,” but North Carolina college radio host Johnny Walker has done more than just walk past the Guinness World Record for longest continuous radio broadcast by an individual.
By the time WUAG(FM)’s Walker switched off his microphone on Aug. 13 at 1:15 p.m., he had logged more than 175 hours on air, tacking more than two days on to the 125-hour record set in April 2006 by Stefano Venneri of BBSI Radio in Alessandria, Italy.
WUAG is the student-run station of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The local entertainment paper Go Triad ran a day-by-day diary of the broadcast, which has yet to be certified as official by the Guinness World Records.
Under the Guinness rules, to count as a continuous broadcast, a talent can only take one five-minute break per hour; no song played can be longer than six minutes; during interviews, the broadcaster must speak at least once per minute; and the entire process must be recorded and videotaped.
One of the earliest official individual radio marathon records was 37 hours, set by BBC Radio 1 presenter Simon Mayo in 1999 to raise funds for Comic Relief.
In September 2000, Hospital Radio Chelmsford presenter Greg Daines stayed on air for 73 hours, 33 minutes. The record was extended to 100 hours by WFMU(FM) DJ Glen Jones in May 2001.
In June 2003, Suresh Joachim of Geethavaani Tamil Radio in Scarborough, Ontario, pushed the limit to 120 hours, which was broken by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Max Rushden in November 2004; Rushden was raising funds for Children in Need. That record held until Venneri’s 125 hours in April 2006.
In September 2006, Robin Vember of Rhodes Music Radio in Grahamstown, South Africa. went 126 hours, 44 minutes, to mark the station’s silver anniversary, but the record has yet to be certified by Guinness.
How I hated to hear of my VCS classmate’s passing. John was a funny, smart, kind guy. My heart and sympathies go out to his family. How truly very sad. RIP John. Your friend, Kimberly Gupton Willis
