Baseball Blasts Campbell, 11-4

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball took down mid-major powerhouse Campbell, 11–4, at Jim Perry Stadium on Tuesday evening. Seven different Spartans recorded an RBI in the contest.

Jacob Dilley got UNCG on the board first with an RBI double that brought in Luke Holland for the quick 1-0 lead.

Head Coach Cody Ellis started fifth year senior John Horton for his first start of the season, however he ran into trouble early in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third with one out, back-to-back RBI bunts gave the Camels the 2-1 lead.Campbell threatened again in the third with the bases loaded and one out. Horton was relieved by Jacob Colucci, who allowed one inherited run but minimized the damage for a 3-1 deficit. Colucci went on to pitch five and a third innings with just two hits given up on one walk and four strikeouts in the eventual win.

With the Camels’ offense stonewalled, the Spartans got the bats going in the top of the fifth when Ethan Brittain laid down an RBI bunt to cut the lead down to 3-2. UNCG broke the game open in the seventh inning with four runs, starting off with a Jake Barbour RBI double advancing Luke Jenkins to third. Jenkins went on to score from a balk by the Camels’ Zach Sabers to give UNCG the 4-3 lead. Holland traded places with Barbour as he tripled down the left field line to extend the score to 5-3. The Blue and Gold capped off the frame with a Jake Mueller bloop RBI single over the shortstop to end the inning up 6-3. The offensive surge continued as the Spartans added two runs from a Campbell fielding error to bring the score to 8-3 heading into the ninth. UNCG capped off the game with three more insurance runs with the latter two coming from a two RBI single from Tanner Berry to head to the bottom half up 11-3.
