Women’s Soccer Wraps Non-Conference Play With Draw Against Johnson & Wales
Motto completes seventh career clean sheet, cracks program top-five

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) recorded the seventh shutout of her still short collegiate career, cracking the top-five in the history of the Guilford College women’s soccer team (1-2-2, 0-0-0 ODAC) as they finished non-conference action by playing to a 0-0 draw against Johnson & Wales University- Charlotte (2-1-2, 0-0-0 C2C) at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center on Sunday morning.
The Quakers controlled the game, but just could not cash in on the scoresheet after out-shooting the Wildcats, 16-4 and 8-2 in shots on goal. GC got more chances from the corner, with a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks, and in the open field, with JWU committing six fouls to the host’s one, but nothing came of the opportunities.
Motto stayed hot in net for Guilford, finishing her second-straight clean sheet, having made 20 saves on her last 21 shots faced over the last three games. Unfortunately, without any offense generated, she did not get credit for the win after her third shutout of the season, moving to 1-2-2. Tested more frequently, Zoe Balmer was up to the task, making eight saves to finish her second clean sheet of the fall and move to 2-1-2.
Ashlyn Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) led all players with five shot attempts, although only one of them was on target. Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.) got all of her three shot attempts on-frame while Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.), Emma Goodnough (Oviedo, Fla.), Ella Prevost (Concord, N.C.), and Peyton Berg (Jacksonville, N.C.) all had single shots on goal
Azalianna Absalom took half the Wildcat shots, with a tandem, one of them on-target. Olivia Kieffer also has a shot on goal while Jess Garman had an off-frame look.
Guilford controlled the ball from the opening kick, generating steady offensive pressure. Absalom and Kieffer got the only two looks on target for the guests but they easily settled into the waiting arms of Motto. GC’s offense took seven total shots with four threatening the twine, but Balmer was up to the task for the Wildcats. As a result, the first half concluded right where it started, in a scoreless tie.
The second half of action saw more of the same, albeit now with an increased amount of neutral-field play. The Quaker defense locked things down, allowing a single, off-target shot. Meanwhile GC ratcheted up the pressure late, firing a total of nine shots, but only a quartet were on goal. As a result, the match ended in a scoreless draw.
Back on the road next, Guilford begins Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play next on Wednesday, September 23, visiting the reigning league champions and No. 3 nationally ranked Washington & Lee University kicking off at 6:00 PM in Lexington, Va.
