‘Hoppers dull Drive bats with stellar pitching, down Drive 5-1

Three straight games of 15 or more combined runs did not extend to four as the Greensboro Grasshoppers (20-19, 56-47) flipped the script, as instead of downing the Greenville Drive (18-22, 54-52) via a barrage of runs, they lulled the Drive bats to sleep with stellar pitching enroute to a 5-1 victory.

The Drive, having come off a seven-run effort in a loss the night before, found zero answer for Greensboro starter Derek Diamond’s mix of pitches: mustering just a meager two hits through four innings. Ultimately, they Drive would leave six runners on base while going 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position in their limited attempts to find footing in the game offensively.

After two scoreless innings the ‘Hoppers jumped out in front for the third time in the series, starting the scoring with Brenden Dixon’s second homer of the series and the ‘Hoppers’ twelfth overall to jump to the early 1-0 lead.

In a rather peculiar play later in the inning, an attempted double steal by the ‘Hoppers put Maikol Escotto on third and he’d wind up coming home as catcher Ronald Rosario’s attempted throw slipped from his hand and fell halfway between home and third.

A confused Escotto started to advance toward home, trotted back to third but then took off for home again as Rosario, third baseman Karson Simas and pitcher Dalton Rogers stood frozen as none moved for the ball until Escotto was halfway home, allowing him to score easily and make it 2-0. Jase Bowen added an RBI-single two batters later to make it 3-0.

Greenville finally found some offense in the fifth. After relinquishing Jack Brannigan’s fifth homer of the series to extend the deficit to 4-0, Eduardo Lopez blasted his fifth homer of the year to cut the ‘Hoppers’ lead to 4-1.

The fifth inning would prove pivotal in the tide of the game as well. After two outs, Karson Simas and Nick Decker walked then pulled a double steal putting two in scoring position for Roman Anthony. But Anthony went down on strikes squandering the Drive’s momentum for a potential comeback.

Casey Cobb relieved Rogers with one out in the fifth and eventually rolled through 3.2 innings, his longest relief appearance of the season. He’d compile four strike outs and allow just two hits before turning it over to Aaron Perry in the ninth.

Perry would relinquish the ‘Hoppers fifth and final run though it’d come on a fielding error by Cutter Coffey as he attempted to get the final out at second after bobbling the transfer. The Drive would go down in order in the bottom of the ninth, giving the ‘Hoppers the commanding lead in the series, 3-1.

The Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox) return to action Saturday, August 12 at 7:05 p.m. for game five of the six-game series with the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Pittsburgh Pirates).
