Not many games with our Guilford County teams tonight, but the game that was played down there at Gibsonville, that was one of those Game of the Week, Game of the Month, and Game of the Year candidates…How could all of the local stations not have that game, as their Game of the Week???
Eastern Guilford is for REAL, and Western Alamance is really good…You have to be good to win one in Overtime, and that is what the Warriors did tonight…..You probably caught the final by now, Western Alamance 26, Eastern Guilford 20 in OT….A one-yard run by Cam Cotton wins it for the Warriors…WA had the ball on first down at the Eastern Guilford five-yard line, and how you gonna stop that kind of field position on four downs….An EG penalty pushed the ball to the five, and Western took it in from there…
But this was a monster of game….WA up early, 7-0, but Eastern Guilford comes right back with a 56-yard TD pass play from Eastern Guilford’s Jackson Jones, to the do-it-all Wildcat Wideout, Steven Murray…Murray took it to the house, but the extra point was missed…Caleb Creech scores on a two-yard run for the ‘Cats, and the Wildcat Crazies had plenty to be going wild about…
Western Alamance QB Evan Kuehnel and WR Kenonte Poteat ripped off a 71-yard pass play for a touchdown, and the WA kicker Camden Oliverira drove through a 30-yard field goal, and the score was going WA up 7-6, then WA moved on top 10-6, the EG goes on top 13-10, and EG takes 20-10 lead….EG had enough smoke to win this game, but WA scored with 9.6 seconds left in regualation to tie the game all up, at 20-20…
Eastern Guilford got the ball first in Overtime, and the ‘Cats could not gain one inch, on their four cracks at the end zone…Four downs from the 10, and EG could not get in…This was one wild football game, in EG Wildcat Country…But with real good teams like Western Alamance, you can not let these type of teams hang around…
If you let teams like Western hang around, and allow them to stay in the game, then they will eventually find a way to beat you….WA found that connection in OT, on Friday night at the Tommy Grayson Stadium, there on the Eastern Guilford campus in Gibsonville….
It was one big-time Overtime Battle, and I have to give a HUGE shout out to the EG ‘Cats J’Dyn Boyd….Boyd had what might just be the Defensive Play of the Year, in Guilford County….Boyd stripped the ball away from the Eastern Guilford runner, and Boyd gave his EG ‘Cats possesion of that loose football just past midfield….If he would have been able to break loose, then he would have been gone, but as is, Eastern turned that play into points….Boyd looked he was having a Wildcat Roaring Night, at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio, as he ripped the ball away from the WA runner…Boyd did his best Dosey Doe, and don’t you know he would have taken that football to the house, if the trainload of WA tacklers didn’t rain on his parade….
But at it is, J’Dyn Boyd was brining The Defensive Play of the Year to the Tommy Grayson Stadium, on Friday evening….Boyd gets our Defensive Player of the Game award, with the Steak n Shake name…We gave the Offensive Player of the Game honors to EG’s QB Jackson Jones..Jones was punting, kicking, throwing passes as the EG QB, and chasing anybody that tried to steal his pumpkin…The pumpkin being the seed/football…The coaches used to always talk about ‘Toting the Seed’…
Would have been hard to write up a script like the one we saw tonight, at Eatern Guilford HS….Torry Holt, Terrence Holt, Scott Youmans, Murray Youmans, Tim Dumas, Earl Bates, Spencer Clapp, and others have been on this stage before down there in ‘Cat Country, and think the former ‘Cats we just mentioned above, would love to have been at this BIG TIME Game in ‘Cat Country’ on this Friday night…
Next Friday night, the EG Wildcats(2-1/0-0) will travel over to Northeast Guilford HS to take on the new and imroved NEG Rams(3-0)…This one will be the conference opener for both teams, and the fans should be ready to pack out the Bill Bookout Stadium, for this primetime Mid-State 3-A Conference battle…
Really looking forward this encounter between the Rams and the ‘Cats…And do think that “Cat Country” would be a great name, for a Country Music Radio Station….Go and get it….
