Reidsville demolishes George Washington; Morehead shut out by Providence Grove | Rockingham County Review

Morehead and Reidsville took to the gridiron to take us into Labor Day weekend. One team had a night to remember, and one team had a night to forget. Reidsville had the night to remember, putting up a stunningly dominant 42-14 over a talented George Washington High School squad, while Morehead was less fortunate, being downed by Providence Grove, 23-0.

McMichael had an extra day off after their loss to Wilkes Central, 47-14, up in the mountains yesterday. The Fighting Phoenix will welcome South Stokes (0-2, 2A) to Mayodan one week from today as both they and their opponents attempt to get into the win column.

Morehead performed well defensively and moved the ball better than last week, but ultimately, Providence Grove got the best of them. Morehead was able to get first downs and run the ball efficiently, but they were never able to make a deep run into Providence Grove territory when it mattered. Providence Grove scored three touchdowns and a field goal to get the 23-0 victory. Next up, Morehead still seeks their first score of the season as they battle Cummings (0-2, 4A) in seven days’ time.

Reidsville pulled off what was not a shocking win but a shocking blowout, devouring George Washington High School 42-14. The win saves Reidsville from their first two-loss start to the season in two decades. This win bodes well for the ‘Ville, not only because it is a massive win over a school with an impressive résumé, but because it also proves that the Rams can overcome adversity and bounce back from losses that hurt. However, this was not the only tough test Reidsville will have to pass. Next Friday, the 4A Rams travel to Pfafftown, where they will compete with Reagan (2-0, 7A).

Rockingham County High School played their game yesterday. They lost to Magna Vista, 39-0, in a very difficult game. Their next challenge is Western Alamance (1-1, 5A) on the road on September 5th.

Bartlett Yancey experienced an excruciating loss to American Leadership Academy-Johnston, having their grip slid on an early lead and eventually falling in third overtime, 54-46. Carver and Winston-Salem Prepatory Academy’s final score has not been reported. Walkertown put a beatdown on Parkland, 50-16, to notch their second large win of the year in just two games. The following are the Mid-State rankings, solely based on overall record, and not factoring in Carver’s game which has not had a finalized score report as of yet.
