Hernandez Records Strong Finish at NCAA Winston-Salem Regional

BERMUDA RUN, N.C. – Kelvin Hernandez of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s golf team finished tied for 25th place at the NCAA Winston-Salem Regional after the final round on Wednesday at Bermuda Run Country Club.
Hernandez notched a three-under-par (210) with round scores of 72-71-67 to move up 13 positions in the final round, finishing in a tie for 25th place.
The junior’s 67 final round was his sixth time this season with a below-70 round score. Hernandez carded a total of 22 birdies and 37 pars across the three rounds. Five of those birdies and 12 of the pars came in Wednesday’s final round.
Ben James of Virginia finished atop the 75-player leaderboard with a 19-under-par (194) behind rounds of 66-63-65.
Virginia and Pepperdine claimed a tie for first place on the 14-team leaderboard with a 36-under-par (816) team score. Ole Miss, Southern California and Mississippi State rounded out the top five teams to advance to NCAA Championships.
Jacob Long of Kentucky finished as the top player not on an advancing team with a nine-under-par (204) to move on to the NCAA Championships as an individual.
Among The Southern Conference (SoCon) at the Winston-Salem Regional, Harris Barth of Furman finished in a tie for 14th place with a six-under-par (207), while Tyler Jones of Western Carolina claimed a tie for 37th place behind a one-over-par (214).
Hernandez earned the automatic bid into the 2026 NCAA Regionals after securing first place in the 2026 SoCon Championships on Wednesday, April 29 at Solina Country Club. The junior fired off rounds of 67-72-65, setting a new course record in the final round.
Hernandez’ appearance in the NCAA Winston-Salem Regional marked the 10th time in the UNCG Division I era that the Spartans have made an NCAA Regionals appearance as either a team or individual.
UNCG finished in fourth place in the SoCon Championships behind a nine-over-par (861) with round scores of 289-290-282. The Spartans carded their best finish of the season at the Dorado Beach Collegiate on Feb. 24, notching third place with a three-under-par (285). UNCG recorded six top-10 finishes on the 2025-26 season.
