Women’s Soccer Battles, Fall to Brevard
Motto makes career-high dozen saves in premier non-conference clash
from Bryce Johnson, Director of Athletic Communications
BREVARD, N.C. – The Guilford College women’s soccer team (1-2-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) took the reigning USA South Champions, Brevard College (2-0-1, 0-0-0 USA South), down to the wire, but suffered a 1-0 defeat on Saturday night at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Things could have gotten out of hand as the Tornados held a 28-5 edge in shots and 13-3 in shots on target, but the defense held firm to keep them in it, they just could not cash in.
Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) made a career-high 12 saves on the 28 total shots sent her way, falling to 1-2-0. Abby Nunez got the start for BC and made three saves to improve to 2-0-1 with the clean sheet.
Not much offense materialized for Guilford, with Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.) getting two on-frame shots, Maddie Fella (Holly Springs, N.C.) taking two shots, one on-goal and one off, and Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) attempting a shot that was off-target representing GC’s five shots.
The goal scorer was Bella Labno with the keeper, Nunez assisting on the play.
The defenses held a level score throughout the first half with BC taking nine shots to the Quakers one, including 6-0 in shots on goal. However, the Guilford backline held firm.
Unfortunately, the breakthrough came in the 60th minute. Nunez came up to initiate a free kick, ripping one off the GC line. The rebound found the feet of Labno who narrowly stayed onside, and put it past Motto for the matches’ lone score in a 1-0 final.
Guilford finally comes home for a rivalry clash against Greensboro College next on Wednesday, September 16 starting at 6:00 PM at the App.
