UNCG Women’s Soccer Draws with The Citadel, 1-1
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s soccer team and The Citadel Bulldogs played to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at Washington Light Infantry Field in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play.
The game was evenly matched until the Spartans had the first shot on goal that was saved by the Bulldogs’ goalkeeper Zoe Santos in the ninth minute of play. Summer Kaufman registered two more chances that went over the crossbar during the first half, before Laney Smith’s strike in the 20th minute hit the right post.
In the 42nd minute, UNCG was called for a foul inside the 18-yard box, giving The Citadel a penalty kick. Samantha Grantham converted the kick, sending it into the back left corner of the net to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The final minutes of the half played out, as UNCG went into the break with a 7-5 shot advantage.
The game was played through until the 63rd minute before it was halted with weather in the area. After trying to restart a few times, the two teams were finally able to get back on the field to continue playing at 7:02 p.m.
The Bulldogs tallied two corners in a span of one minute, but UNCG was able to fend off The Citadel’s offensive attack. In the 76th minute, a Bulldogs’ pass was intercepted by Rina Ogimoto at about midfield and Smith was able to turn and beat a few defenders before sneaking the ball past Santos’ outstretched hands for the equalizer. In the remaining time, The Citadel managed one more shot, which Blythe Clark saved, before time expired. The draw earned each team a point in the standings.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Smith netted the fifth goal of her career and season, bringing her total to 14 points this year.
UNCG outshot The Citadel, 11-8, as both teams had five shots on goal.
The Spartans earned three corner kicks, while the Bulldogs had two.
Clark and Santos each had four saves in net during the game.

WHAT’S NEXT
The Spartans are set to host Tennessee Tech next Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6:00 p.m., before welcoming Mercer on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1:00 p.m. Both games are at UNCG Soccer Stadium and all regular season home games are free admission.
