Guilford College Women’s Soccer Bested By Shenandoah in Defensive Bout
Motto, backline brilliant, but single tally enough in ODAC clash
from Bryce Johnson, Director of Athletic Communications
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) and the backline of the Guilford College women’s soccer team (2-10-2, 1-8-0 ODAC) was stout, but Shenandoah University (12-5-0, 6-4-0 ODAC) got a solo tally to take a 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory on Saturday afternoon at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center.
The Hornet defense shut things down in the second half, as both Quaker shots came in the opening 45, including GC’s lone look on frame. SU split their 17 total shots and 11 shots on target between the two halves while also drawing seven corners to GC’s one in the match.
Reaching double-digit saves for the fifth time this fall, Motto made 10 stops against the one tally permitted as she fell to 2-9-2 on the year. Molly Donaldson made the one save necessary to complete her sixth clean sheet of the season, improving to 9-3-0 for the guests.
Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) had the single shot on-target for GC on the day while Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.) attempted a single off-line shot.
McKenna Newcome scored the matches’ lone goal, good for her fifth game-winner of the year. She got a helper from Emme Rivera.
The opening half was played to a stalemate with SU taking nine shots to Guilford’s two and had five shots on goal to the Quakers one.
The breakthrough in the match would come in the 52nd minute as the Hornets drove down the left sideline with Rivera gathering right in front of their bench. She sent a feed to the top of the 18′ where Newcome used her body to settle and turned the corner on the Quaker defender, ripping a shot from about 20 yards away out from the right post, shooting cross-crease and into the twice for her 12th goal of the season.
GC could not generate an offensive from there, but Motto continued to impress including consecutive saves in the 65th minute, making a save diving to her left before gathering enough on her left him to stop a second try immediately after. Despite her efforts, though, the score would finalize at 1-0.
It will be the season finale and Senior Day for the women’s soccer team next, as they host Sweet Briar College on Wednesday, October 28 starting at 7:00 PM.
