GC Softball Splits Twinbill at Averett on Tuesday

The Pride softball team rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 4-2 to beat Averett, 5-4, in game one of a Tuesday road doubleheader. Unfortunately, the momentum did not carry over to the second game, a 5-0 setback.

The Cougars scored first in the opener with a run in the second inning and extended the lead to 2-0 after three innings. Greensboro tied the game up at 2-2 in the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles by Jackie Nicholson and Kelsey Burkett.

Averett immediately responded by putting up two runs in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead at 4-2 heading into the fifth inning.

The Pride trimmed away at the gap in the fifth, when Kanisha Fogg scored on a balk. Hayley Hicks provided the equalizer and go ahead runs in the sixth for Greensboro with a two run single to center field.

The Cougars made things interesting in the seventh, placing runners on the corners before Kelsey Sanfilippo worked herself out of a two out jam.

The Pride hammered out 13 hits in the first game win. Fogg led the attack with three hits while Brittany Teer, Reihle Kash and Heather Nellis each added two apiece.

Sanfilippo picked up the win with a complete game, seven strikeout performance. She allowed three earned runs on six hits.

In game two, Averett put up two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings and added a run in the fifth to take a 5-0 victory. The Pride managed only five hits in the defeat, coming from the bats of five different players. Hannah Pennell suffered the loss in 6.0 innings of work.

Greensboro is now 16-16 on the season and 7-7 in the conference. The Pride will wrap up the regular season this weekend with home doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday at North Carolina A&T. Greensboro will host Mary Baldwin at 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday and Shenandoah at 12 and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
