Got the high school story of the week yesterday, and was talking to former Grimsley Whirlie football player Phil Trollinger, and he was telling us about a game involving the Grimsley Whirlies and the Smith Golden Eagles, and this high school football game took place back in the late 60’s/early 1970’s… They had just come out with the new full cage face masks for the football helmets, and in this Grimsley-Smith game, the defensive player from Grimsley was chasing the quarterback from Smith, and the Smith kid might have been Andy Wilson, or Andy Williams, but his name was Andy…
Boy, they used to turn out in full force, back when Dudley and Smith used to meet in high school football games at N.C. A&T’s Aggie Stadium… I remember one year that was right at 20,000 fans there to see the game, and that crowd might have grown to 23,000 before the night was over…. Tony McKee was coaching Smith, and Coach Steven Davis was coaching Dudley….Smith had a running back that they used to call “The Bus” and that “Bus” would carry Smith to at least one win over Dudley at A&T…Smith was also able to beat Dudley one…

Smith High School, was the only area Champion from the Greensboro region at this past weekend’s Holy Angels Wrestling Tournament in Charlotte….Big Championship Win for Jonathan Millner(Smith HS) in the 132 pound class, with a 6-4 decision over Quinton Mickerson, from West Charlotte HS…Dylan Cook of Ragsdale, finished second in the 106 pound weight class, while Ben Bullins, from Morehead and Tyshawn Olverson, also from Morehead, came in second as well, in the 170 and 195 pound classed respectively….Crazy is that Cook lost 6-4 in his final and Bullins lost out by the same 6-4…

When Nyla Allen entered her final season playing basketball for Guilford Technical Community College, she did so with focus and drive. That summer, she worked out every day so that, in her words, she “could come out with a bang.” And she did.
