The Greensboro Colts defeated Tampa, Florida 5-2 in game one of the Colt World Series at Lafayette, Indiana. The team which is like our Greensboro White squad, beat a Tampa team that had won 18 straight games before Wednesday, and Tampa has won the three most recent(2003-2005) Colt World Series titles.
This is a great start for our Greensboro club and starting pitcher Austin Moyer(Southeast Guilford) went four innings with 5 K’S before giving way to Timmy Dezern and Blaine McCraw with Dezern getting the win.
The Colts out-hit Tampa 6-3 with Jake Rierson(Northwest Guilford) collecting two of the six hits and Jeff Medley(Southeast Guilford) got the big shot a two-run homerun, and Alan Craven(Grimsley) chipped in with a solid double. Again the fact that Greensboro held Tampa to just 3 hits says a lot for the job the pitching staff did against a Tampa team with huge reputation.
The Greensboro Colts also backed up that pitching staff with excellent defense. My on-site reporter Kevin Moore(Thrifty Market) tells me that Aaron Jones(Grimsley) made what could have been the defensive play-of-the-day when he made a diving stop at 1st base preventing a big run scoring opportunity by Tampa. Clint Moore(Grimsley) the Gate City shortstop, was 1-3 at the plate and added 6 put-outs defensively and Clint made a play blocking the ball with his body to take away a Tampa hit that also was a turning point for the Greensboro defense. I’ve seen Moore play in person and he can do many different things to help his team. Michael Dimock(High Point Wesleyan) ,who was a big part of the team’s pitching success in the East Zone tourney back in Greensboro, was another defensive stalwart for the Colts during the win on Wednesday out in Indy.
Skipper Alan Ashkinazy must have been pushing all the right buttons on Wednesday as the Greensboro Colts got their World Series tournament off to a flying start. After the hot start the team does not play again until Friday at 2:30pm when they take on Puerto Rico. We will be in contact with Kevin Moore and his wife Sharon(who keeps a lock on the scorebook) throughout the entire Colt World Series tournament with our Greensboro squad out in Lafayette, Indiana.
