The Greensboro Grasshoppers put together a complete team effort and rode the excellent starting pitching of big Chris Volstad to victory on Thursday night at First Horizon Park. The Hoppers won it 4-0 over a Savannah Sand Gnat club that had spoiled Greensboro’s home-stand opener 10-5 back on Wednesday evening.
The Hoppers take game two of their 4 game set with the Gnats and will continue their 8 game home-stand on Friday night at FHP. Thursday’s hero was Volstad as he went six innings, struck out 5 Gnats and walked none. Volstad left headed for the clubhouse with a lead and this time the Hoppers’ bullpen did not let them down. Mauro Zarate worked the 7th and 8th innings mowing down 3 Gnats by strikeout and then Blake Jones, Wednesday’s loser finished off Savannah in the 9th.
Brad Correll hit his second homer in as many nights and Brett Hayes connected for his 7th HR of the season on a liner to left. Both Hopper homers were solo shots. Hayes reached base for the 8th consecutive time on Thursday but then had his streak broken in his last at bat.
James Guerrero and Jon Fulton made note-worthy plays in the field for the Grasshoppers and as we mentioned earlier this was a complete team effort that led to Thursday’s 4-0 win. To put a little icing on the cake Paul Witt drew two walks and got a hit to reach base three times from his number nine spot in the batting and he also scored one of the four Hopper runs. Aaron Thompson will be on the hill for the Hoppers on Friday night and let’s hope the guys can make it 2 wins in a row with the Fireworks flying into the Gate City skyline after the game.
