This Week in Greensboro Hockey History

Things are looking good for Greensboro to have hockey next season, which will mark the game’s return to the Gate City for the first time since the Greensboro Generals folded following the 2002-03 season.

Word over at greensborohockey.com is that a team name, staff, lease agreement and price structure is already in place. As we get closer to an official announcement, we will start looking back at games in Greensboro’s rich hockey history. The following is the week in history for January 7th-13th.

January 8th, 1998 – Ron Hextall makes 38 saves for the Philadelphia Flyers in a 3-3 tie with the Carolina Hurricanes.

January 9th, 1996 – Ryan Smyth and Gilbert Dionne each had two goals as the Carolina Monarchs defeated the Rochester Americans 6-4.

January 9th, 2000 – Oleg Timchenko scored twice as the Greensboro Generals routed the Trenton Titans 8-5.

January 9th, 2001 – Curtis Huppe scored the game-winner in overtime as the Greensboro Generals defeated the Johnstown Chiefs 5-4.

January 9, 2003 – David Evans had a hat-trick and David Newman chipped in 2 more as the Charlotte Checkers routed the Greensboro Generals 8-1.

January 10th, 2003 – Olaf Kjenstad had a hat-trick as the Greensboro Generals blew out the Richmond Renegades 7-2.

January 11th, 2003 – Greg Day had two goals and an assist as the Greensboro Generals, playing their third game in three nights, dropped a 5-2 decision to Peoria.

January 12th, 1998 – Ron Francis and Jaromir Jagr score as the Penguins defeat the Hurricanes 4-1.

January 12th, 2002 – Chris Wells had a goal and two assists and Arpad Mihaly added another goal as the Wheeling Nailers defeated the Greensboro Generals, 4-1.
January 13th, 2002 – Allan Sirois scored in overtime as the Pee Dee Pride defeated the Generals 3-2.

January 13th, 1996 – 7.025 turned out to watch the Carolina Monarchs drop a 6-3 decision to the Baltimore Bandits.

January 14th, 1996 – Dwayne Norris scored the equalizer with :43 left in regulation as the Baltimore Bandits salvaged a 5-5 tie with the Carolina Monarchs.

January 14th, 1998 – Eric Daze scored twice as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1.

January 14th, 1999 – Ron Francis set up Glen Wesley with a behind-the-back, between-the-legs pass
at 19:19 of the third period to give the Carolina Hurricanes a dramatic 3-2 win over the 2nd place
Florida Panthers.
