Randy Tuggle Hired at Greensboro College

Randy Tuggle has been named head coach of the Greensboro College women’s basketball and men’s and women’s cross country teams, announced Pride Athletics Director Kim Strable.

He replaces his cousin, Jason, who accepted the director of athletics post at his alma mater: Eden’s Morehead High School. Randy was the lead Pride women’s basketball assistant coach under Jason Tuggle the past seven years.

“We are pleased that Randy Tuggle will join our full-time athletics staff,” said Strable. “In his years of service as an assistant he’s been both a teacher and mentor to our student-athletes and is well prepared to lead the basketball and cross country programs.”

During his tenure at Greensboro College, Coach Tuggle assisted in leading The Pride to three USA South Conference Regular Season Championships, four Conference Tournament Championships, and four NCAA Tournament appearances.

Yet the 2008-09 GC women’s basketball team completed the best season of any previous Greensboro College hoops team. The Pride went 27-3 and produced a .900 winning percentage. Greensboro finished an unprecedented 18-0 in conference play and captured the USA South regular season crown for the fourth time in five seasons. The team advanced to the NCAA tournament–its first ever as an at large selection. GC reached #18 in the national rankings and won a program-record 21 straight games.

“Randy was a crucial to our success,” Jason Tuggle said. “He has been involved in all facets of the program with primary responsibilities in recruiting, scouting, and post player development. Randy has been a loyal and dedicated coach and he deserves this opportunity.”

Tuggle arrived at Greensboro College in 2001 after spending three years as an assistant coach at Northwest Guilford High School, his alma mater, where he ran cross country in addition to playing basketball for the Vikings. Prior to his time at Northwest, Randy was an assistant coach at Western Guilford High School where the Hornets were Piedmont Triad 3A Conference champions and advanced in the State Play-offs. He also helped start the NC Lady Gators AAU program, a team that placed 6th at Nationals

As a longtime native of the Greensboro area, Randy was a four-year letter winner for the Spartans of UNC-Greensboro. His junior year he played an integral role with a Spartan squad that qualified for the NCAA national tournament and was selected team captain his senior season.

In addition to basketball, Tuggle has strong connections to the Greensboro business community. Active in local mortgage and real estate field since 1980, he most recently was a loan officer at Suntrust Bank. From 1997-2007, he was self employed with Homestead Mortgage/Acceptance.

Tuggle, who enjoys golf in his spare time, and his wife Susan have two children: Jimmy and Lauren Childrey. Lauren resides in the Gate City with her husband, Ryan.

  1. Greensboro College did the right thing! Randy is a great person and a great basketball mind. I have played against Randy for years and he is certainly qualified to teach post players. His elbow has left a permanent imprint on my chest. I know he will do well and everybody at Greensboro College will benefit from him being there.

  2. Excellent points Tom. Randy has kind of been in the background, in the shadows of Jason Tuggle at GC and before that Anthony Long out at Northwest Guilford and it is good to see Randy get his shot as the head coach and we look forward to next year as he takes charge.

After the season gets rolling, I bet we will see Jason Tuggle dropping in for a few games too. Early on I think he will stand back and let Randy lay his groundwork and then he’ll come back as a spectator.
