Looking ahead to NCHSAA Boys playoffs Round Two for Wednesday

There will be some good ones and the comp gets much tougher across the board in Round Two…

Many of our teams will take to the road, but the Dudley boys and girls will both be at home for a rare doubleheader against like opponents in Round Two with Mount Tabor coming to the Lincoln Street campus….

Boys action for Wednesday:
Mount Tabor(20-7) at Dudley(20-6)…..MT is the defending 4-A State Champion and coached by Andy Muse, but no CJ Harris, Mike Grace or Josh Hicks this year, but they are still The Spartans….(The inside games of Clyburn, Alston and Byrd can be big for Dudley in the playoffs. We all know that Wyatt, Hairston and Dillard will be there and if the big men show up it will mean doulbe-trouble when the Spartans come in the middle….The freshmen Richmond and Hunt can add to the MT misery if they are on from the outside…)

Union Pines(14-12) at Northern Guilford(23-2)…..A Jonathan Frye, Dylan Berry and John McBeth-led Nighthawks squad should be ready to cut the down the pines, before they cut down the nets and move on to Round Three…..

Matthews Butler(12-15) at Ragsdale(14-13)…..A battle of regular season #1 Ragsdale and conference tournament winner Butler, to decide who goes on to Round Three and as we mentioned last night, Butler had to win three straight to claim their conference crown and qualify for the State Tournament and they won the Final in the low-scring 30’s with something like a 36-33 title taker….Tyquan Roberts and Ragsdale ready for a run?????

Northwest Guilford(12-15) at Ardrey Kell(18-8)…..The NWG Vikings have become the “Comeback Team of the Decade”, and they were down 5 to Smith in the first half last night and they went on an 18-0 run and they ran themselves right into Round Two of the playoffs….During the regular season Coach Manny Bloom used about a 9-10 man rotation, but he has that down to 7 guys that he is calling upon to carry this team further into the playoffs….Vikings have their hands full, but they have been the hottest boys team in the county over the last two and a-half weeks….Left-side three-pointer when the Smith Golden Eagles did not get back and defend on the break was the big shot of the game in OT Monday night and the quick inbounds steal right after the made-basket was quick and slick as well…..

High Point Central(13-11) at WS Reagan(20-3)…..The Reagan Raiders are coached by long-time leader of Forsyth County coaching, Howard West, who won State Titles while at WS Reynolds and before that he was at Morehead….Reagan is on par with some of the old Reynolds squads and West used to have the pick of the litter when it came to Forsyth County boys basketball players and it might be headed that way again after Tabor took over that Title last season…..

Cardinal Gibbons(13-12) at Northeast Guilford(16-10)….Coach Curtis Hunter and his NEG Rams have been doing everything right in recent weeks and they have quietly put together an excellent season and in the process they picked up the Mid-Piedmont 3-A Championship last Friday night at Asheboro when they topped previous #1 North Forsyth….You would think that NEG would keep this winning-streak alive with a home win on Wednesday and that they might have their sights set on East Carolina for next week….Coach Hunter took a team there to the East Regionals around four years ago when he had Mezie Uzuchukwu and the point guard Ishmel Hinson and can Curtis get his men back there this soon and if so, it would be even more amazing considering that the Rams lost Antwan Wilkerson, Skip McCleese and Montay Brandon off of last year’s roster….NEG has quietly been getting it done out on Hicone Road…
