Stepping up to the plate with local college baseball: N.C. A&T’s Lester Rivenbark with a two-run homer on Tuesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro pulled out to an early 5-2 lead, but Eastern Kentucky scored five unearned runs off four errors as UNCG fell to the Colonels, 9-6, on Tuesday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Colonel reliever Chris Barte picked up his first win of the year after pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief and allowing one run on two hits. Ryne Purcell came in to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth to record his third save of the season. Wes McBride was credited with the loss after allowing four runs, all unearned, in just a third of an inning of relief.

The Spartans were led at the plate by senior Ed Jayjack who went 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored along with a walk. Ryan Faidley paced the Colonels by going 3-4 as well and scoring three runs.

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State (11-1) scored double digit runs for the fifth straight game in a 14-10 win over North Carolina A&T (3-7). The Wolfpack’s hot hitting continued, racking up 18 hits over eight innings. Drew Poulk and Kyle Wilson both extended their hitting streaks to 12 games.

Anthony Tzamtzis (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to get the win, while Garrett Braun (0-1) was handed the loss.

Wolfpack starter Danny Healey struggled with his command early, walking two batters in the first inning, but he managed to get out of trouble.

In the top of the second, Lester Rivenbark(Grimsley HS) hit a two-run home run over left center to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.

The Wolfpack responded quickly in the bottom of the second, when Pratt Maynard blasted a two-run home run over the centerfield wall to tie the game 2-2.

Vance Williams replaced Healey in the top of the third inning, and got some help with two stellar defensive plays from Dallas Poulk and Harold Riggins.
