Minnesota – a Division I school in the Big Ten – spent $27,500 on recruiting last year.

Now, that sounds like a lot – until you consider that’s split between 23 different sports. Even if your sport is getting a full third of that, how many round trips, including hotels, meals, and plane tickets for one or two coaches will that buy?

In other words, the funds are low for college coaches, when it comes time for them to hit the ‘Recruiting Trail’….

  1. Too many highschool basketball players think that they are DI players and have not even secured D2 or D3 scholarships yet. Heck even those schools are not waiting around for them any more. Can you blame them?

  2. This article really points out the importance of that spring/summer AAU season and why you better be attached to the correct organization that has the contacts. We are fortunate to be in a state like NC that has so many good colleges within a 4-5 hour radius. Kids in this area should not be going without a good offer if they have a good game. Imagine how diffucult it could be for a similar kid in a state like Maine or Wyoming. This is also one of the advantages of playing high school basketball in a private setting which allows you more exposure outside of your city or county.
