Local team, Thomasville Prep girls (21-1) breaks into ESPN’s top ranking list at number 50

Change, they say, is inevitable. And with a Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday weekend
packed with big matchups, it’s fitting that there are plenty of changes in the
POWERADE FAB 50 this week.
There was no change at the top, though, as No. 1 St. Mary’s (Phoenix, Ariz.) took
care of last week’s No. 5 team, Windward (Los Angeles, Calif.), with a 62-48 victory
in Phoenix. With Bolingbrook (Ill.) and Riverdale (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) continuing
to play at a high level, Windward slides a few spots to No. 7. The return of junior
point guard Tyisha Petty for Riverdale helped power the Warriors over Norcross
(Ga.), which falls one spot to 14th.
Eight new teams earned spots in the national rankings. The highest ranked of the
newbies is No. 30 Cardinal O’Hara (Springfield, Pa.), which knocked off last week’s
No. 25 team and in-state rival Archbishop Carroll (Radnor, Pa.). The 41-39 nailbiter
moved Carroll down a few spots to No. 31.
Rounding out the last seven spots are Lake (Unionville, Ohio), Edwardsville (Ill.),
Science Hill (Johnson City, Tenn.), Fairmont (Kettering, Ohio), North Gwinnett
(Suwanee, Ga.), Carroll (Southlake, Texas) and Thomasville Prep (N.C.).
North Gwinnett, with its dynamic duo of juniors Lexie Brown and Peyton Whitted, has
a tough league and a Feb. 10 matchup with Norcross before the gauntlet of Georgia’s
5A state playoffs. This gives the Bulldogs a chance to continue moving up, in a
hurry, if they take care of business.
Panelists: Rebecca Gray, Chris Hansen, Glenn Nelson, Brandon Clay and Keil Moore.
Through games of Jan. 16.

  1. Great work representing the area. There are many thousands of High Schools in the country. To make this list is huge. Good luck moving forward and make us proud!!!!!!

  2. Can someone post a roster of the boys and girls teams for Thomasville Prep?
I went to the school site and they did not have one to click on.

  3. It would be nice if they could play more local teams. Unfortunately only a few local teams had the guts to play them. This represents the area well.

  4. They have somee excellent players on the Prep team. Rudd and staff know the fundamentals of the game! Great job guys keep up the goid work with the kids!

  5. To Doug: What is your point asking “Can you please name them?” The Thomasville Prep team already has 3 girls that signed D1 scholarships and at least 4 other girls that will sign D1 offers within the next 2 years. Anyone that has been around girls basketball in this area over the past couple of years would already know who these girls are ? If you don’t know them, then you obviously are not apart of AAU or the local basketball scene for girls.

  6. I don’t think the comment by Doug was suppose to be taken personal. I think he seems to be just asking who are the good players because they are obviously having success.

Can you board at Thomasville or is it all day students?

  7. Thomasville does have boarding for a limited number of girls and boys. I believe the only boarding kids are from out of this country. It is too bad that Greensboro does not have a program such as Thomasville. If any of the private schools in Greensboro offered boarding options and had good coaches, then they would run NC basketball. It seems like all of the “top” programs in this region like Oak Hill or a Thomasville are located in the middle of no where. Put those programs in a Greensboro, Winston Salem or even just outside a bigger city like Oak Ridge or Jamestown and kids would flock to these schools from everywhere. Just think if schools like New Garden Friends, GDS, or a Wesleyan had boarding options and coaches like Delaney Rudd or a Freddy Johnson. They would be given Oak Hill a major run for their money. If Thomasville Prep ever becomes, “Greensboro Prep” – Wow !
