Tuesday’s game marked the 287th meeting between the two teams in a series that dates back to 1895 … North Carolina has won six of the last eight meetings and leads the rivalry 158-128-1.
In ACC Tournament play, NC State and North Carolina have now played 22 times with each team winning 11 times.

North Carolina sophomore Reilly Hovis, a first-team All-ACC selection as a relief pitcher, made his first start of the season today and the fifth of his career.

NC State’s Trea Turner, a first-team All-ACC selection as a shortstop, went 2-for-4 with a walk, a triple and two stolen bases … now leads the ACC in steals with 26 … the Lake Worth, Fla., junior is fourth among ACC career stolen base leaders with 114 and is one steal shy of tying Georgia Tech’s Scott Jordan (1982-85) for third place.

North Carolina Skye Bolt’s second-inning home run was his third of the season for the Woodstock, Ga., sophomore and ninth of his career.

With three hits in four at bats, NC State catcher Brett Austin notched his league-leading 25th multi-hit game and raised his season batting average from .336 to .344 – good for third in the ACC behind Florida State’s D.J. Stewart (.362) and Maryland’s Brandon Lowe (.345).

North Carolina left fielder Parks Jordan extended his hitting streak to 13 games in a row.

North Carolina’s bullpen of Zach Rice, Trevor Kelley, Spencer Traynor and Trent Thornton combined for 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only two hits with nine strikeouts … with two innings of hitless relief, Thornton picks up his first save of the year and the ninth of his career.
