Elon Baseball Drops CAA Opener

ELON, N.C. – In the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener for both clubs, the William & Mary Tribe jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on its way to a 10-5 victory over the host Elon Phoenix in baseball action from Latham Park on Friday.

Leading the way offensively for Elon (8-10, 0-1 CAA) was Ryne Ogren who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Danny Lynch, Tyler McVicar, Kory Shumate and Liam O’Regan each added to hits to the Phoenix attack.

Charley Gould homered and drove in four during a 2-for-3 day for William & Mary (8-10, 1-0). Ryder Miconi added three hits and drove in a pair.

Elon starter Jordan Barrett (0-1) took the loss after being charged with six runs on eight hits in just 3.2 innings.

Dan Powers (2-1) went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits to pick up the win.

How It Happened: William & Mary’s offense came out hot as the first five hitters all reached, including four with hits. With two on Ryan Hall doubled home the first run before Gould homered to right-center to make it a 4-0 game.

The Tribe added single runs in the third and fourth before scoring twice in the fifth to build an 8-0 lead. Elon would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Ogren followed O’Regan’s leadoff double with a triple to left for the first run and then scored on a Lynch single to make an 8-2 game.

The Phoenix cut its deficit to 8-4 in the sixth as Ogren singled home Will Nance and a bases-loaded wild pitch scored another.

Both sides scored once in the seventh and William & Mary tacked on a final run in the top of the ninth.

Notes: Kyle Jackson went 0-for-5 to snap his 13-game hitting streak… It also marked the first time this season that Jackson failed to reach base safely… Elon’s leadoff hitter reached in seven of the nine innings.

On Deck: Elon and William & Mary are scheduled to play game two of the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19.
