College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford 18th at Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Guilford College’s men’s golf team placed 18th among 30 schools at the three-day, 54-hole Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational Sunday. The Quakers shot 303-288-301 for a 28-over par total of 892.

LaGrange College won the tournament by four strokes over Methodist University and Rhodes College with a five-under total of 859. Rhodes’ Joey Mayo edged LaGrange’s Logan Lanier for medalist honors by carding a five-under 67 Sunday, which gave him a one-stroke win after a 54-hole 67-71-67-205.

The tournament featured 12 teams ranked among the top-20 in the most recent Golfstat.com Head-to-Head Ratings, including second-ranked Methodist and third-ranked Oglethorpe College. Guilford was ranked 17th in the poll. The teams played two courses at the Jekyll Island Club, including the par-72, 6,700-yard Pine Lakes Club on Friday and Sunday and the par-72, 6,521-yard Oleander Blue Course Saturday.

LaGrange had three players shoot sub-par rounds Sunday, which helped them climb into first place after second-round leader Emory University shot 290 Sunday and slipped to fifth place. Methodist, which started the day second, and Rhodes, which was 26th, rallied down the stretch, but could not catch the Panthers and shared second place at 863.

Guilford’s Salah Sayess (Statesville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) turned in Guilford’s low score with a 77-71-71-219, which shared 35th place in the 150-man field. Teammate Josh Hill had a 74-68-79, two shots behind Sayess in a share of 47th place. Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day School) and Tommy Schick provided the Quakers’ other two counting scores Sunday and with rounds of 77. Both golfers shared 120th place among individuals. Justin Perdue also counted Sunday with a 76, which helped him to a tie for 97th at 78-75-76-229.

Coach Justin Tereshko’s Quakers return to action April 3 in Wintergreen, Virginia, where Guilford will play in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Match Play event at the Wintergreen Resort.
