College Track and Field Results – Guilford Claims Two Top-ten Finishes at VertKlasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Guilford College’s men’s side claimed two top-ten finishes as both the men and the women participated in day two of High Point University’s VertKlasse Meeting. The meet featured schools from all NCAA Divisions including members of power-five conferences and featured separate flights of competitions in several events.

Josephus Mitchell (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) nearly broke into Guilford’s top-eight 100 meter dash times with an eighth-place finish in the participation division of the race with a time of 10.88 seconds. Mitchell was less than .03 seconds from cracking the top-five.

Trent Evans (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) posted the men’s other top-ten finish in an individual event with a ninth-place finish in the 800 meter run. He cracked the top ten in the participation division with a time of 1:57.61.

The men’s 4×100 meter relay team of Gus Chambers, Nick Jones, Alex Martin (Pfafftown, N.C./Reagan), and Mitchell claimed sixth amongst non-Division I teams as they posted their fourth-fastest time in school history at 44.26 seconds.

Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie County) led the women by breaking the 400 meter run school record with a time of 1:03.74. Steller broke the previous school record by 2.57 seconds.

Ymani Breedlove set a new record in the 200 meter dash and won her heat with a time of 28.28 seconds. The time broke the previous school record by .53 seconds.

Tess Styrk nearly reached the school record in the 800 meter run, posting a time of 2:30.51, .19 seconds away from tying the school record.

The women’s 4×100 meter relay team of A’lexus Newkirk, Breedlove, Styrk, and Steller ran the seventh-fastest time in school history, finishing with a time of 55.98.

Coach Danny Cash’s Quakers return to action next Saturday, running at the Aggie Invitational at North Carolina A&T.
