Elon Baseball Drops Series Finale to Charleston

ELON, N.C. – In a game that featured 17 runs and 33 hits, the Elon Phoenix baseball team ended up on the wrong side of an 11-6 game as the maroon and gold fell to the College of Charleston Cougars in game three of a Colonial Athletic Association series on Sunday afternoon.

Elon (10-17, 2-6 CAA) got a two-home run game from Liam O’Regan as the freshman drove in three. Nick Zammarelli and Danny Lynch both had three-hit outings for the Phoenix.

For Charleston (20-8, 5-1), Morgan Phillips homered and drove in a pair, while Jake Maziar drove in three during a 3-for-5 day.

Ryan Conroy (3-2) took the loss after being charged with seven runs on 11 hits in 4.0 innings.

The win went to Nathan Ocker (3-0) who allowed one run on three hits in 2.2 innings out of the Cougar bullpen.

How It Happened: After Elon could not turn a double play on the second batter of the game, Phillips connected on his fifth homer of the year to put Charleston up 2-0 in the first inning. With two on and one away later in the frame, Maziar doubled home a pair to give the Cougars a 4-0 advantage that they would not relinquish.

Charleston extended the lead to 6-0 in the second before Elon began to chip away. The Phoenix scored single runs in the second (O’Regan solo homer), third (Lynch RBI single) and fourth (Zammarelli RBI single) to cut it to a 6-3 game.

Charleston would score once in the fifth before the Phoenix again trimmed the deficit to three, 7-4, when Zammarelli drove home another in the sixth.

The Cougars would add one in the seventh before plating three in the eighth to make it 11-4. Elon scored its final two runs in the ninth when O’Regan lined a homer to left.

Notes: Kory Shumate has reached safely in 14 consecutive contests… The teams combined to strand 25 runners left on base.

On Deck: Elon will wrap up its five-game homestand with a 6:30 p.m. game against East Carolina on Tuesday, April 5.
