HPU Athletics Honors 2017 Hall of Fame Class

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University Athletic Department and the HPU Panther Club held the third-annual High Point University Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Saturday night (April 8) inside the Millis Center.

More than 200 former High Point University student-athletes, coaches, staff, family and friends gathered to celebrate and honor four extraordinary members of the HPU Athletics family.

The 2017 Hall of Fame class included Wanda Wilson Cline (’77, Women’s Basketball and Volleyball), Chuck Hartman (Baseball Head Coach, 1961-78, Athletic Director, 1969-72), Danny Sewell (’60, Men’s Basketball), Mike Turmala (’75, Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field) and Ethel White (’79, Women’s Basketball and Volleyball).

“The hall of fame celebration has quickly become one of my favorite High Point University Athletic moments,” HPU Athletic Director Dan Hauser said before the crowd. “We are honored to host Wanda, Chuck, Danny, Mike and Ethel and recognize their achievements tonight.”

The event was emceed by WGHP sports anchor Kevin Connolly.

The 2018 High Point University Hall of Fame Class will be announced this fall.

Wanda Wilson Cline ’77 | Women’s Basketball and Volleyball | 1975-77
Transferred to High Point from Elon in the Fall of 1975 … Carolinas Conference MVP in two different sports (Volleyball ’75, Women’s Basketball ’77) … Averaged 162. Points and 9.3 rebounds per game in two seasons with the women’s basketball team … 1976 All-NCAIAW … 1976 All-State selection … Two-time All-Carolinas Conference (1976-77) … Led team to the AIAW National Tournament in 1977 … Played two seasons with the volleyball team … Two-time All-State (1975-76) … Two-time All-NCAIAW (1975-76) … Two-time All-Carolinas Conference (1975-76) … Led team to the AIAW Tournament in 1976

Chuck Hartman | Baseball | Head Coach, 1961-78 | Athletic Director, 1969-72
Served as the head baseball coach for 18 seasons … Holds the program record for wins with a career record of 483-227-3 … Won 10 conference championships, five district championships and two Area Championships at the NAIA level … Teams earned national rankings every year from 1972-1978, including a ranking of fifth in both 1972 and 1974 … Five-time Carolinas Conference Coach of the Year (1971-72, 74-75, 78) … Six-time NAIA District Coach of the Year (1970-72, 74-75, 78) … 1976 Area Coach of the Year … Went on to coach 27 years at Virginia Tech where he compiled a record of 961-591 … A member of the Gaston County Sports, NAIA, Salem-Roanoke Sports, Virginia Tech Sports, American Baseball Coaches Association and Guilford County Sports Halls of Fame … Served as HPU Athletic Director from 1969-72.

Danny Sewell ’60 | Men’s Basketball | 1956-60
HPU’s seventh all-time leading scorer with 1,667 career points … Sixth all-time in the HPU record book with an scoring average of 19.2 points per game … Averaged 24 points, second in HPU basketball history, and 12 rebounds per game as a junior in 1958-59 … Set an HPU program record with an average of 16 rebounds per game while also averaging 22.8 points per game as a senior in 1959-60 … Two-time NAIA All-American (1959-60) … Three-time All-State (1958-60) … Four-time All-North State Conference (1957-60)
