Hornets End Guilford MSOC’s ODAC Title Run

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lynchburg men’s soccer team scored three unanswered first half goals en route to a 5-1 victory in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship over Guilford on Sunday, April 11th.

The Hornets (9-3-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening period, scoring the first of those at the 8:19 mark when Luke Mega drove a pass from teammate Carter Averette into the back of the net. Lynchburg moved its lead to 2-0 at 13:41 after Bhayle Kearns penetrated the Guilford defense with a goal off the pass from Manzi Shalita.

Lynchburg capped off first half scoring with an unassisted goal by Brenna Lagana with 1:30 remaining before the intermission.

The offensive explosion continued for the Hornets, who took advantage of a goal from Ben Mackey and an assist from Joey Daly to assume the 4-0 lead. Guilford netted its lone goal of the afternoon at the 89:03 mark with a strike from Bruno Gonzalez.

Less than a minute late, Lagana drove home his second goal off the match to stretch the Hornets’ lead back to four. Kyle Gallagher (8-3-1) picked up the win in net, making one save over the course of the day.

Lynchburg attempted 20 shots over the course of the match, including 12 shots on goal. Guilford (6-4-2) made five shots, two on goal, in 90 minutes of play. Zach Van Kampen (6-3-2) faced 12 shots on goal during the match, converting seven saves.
