Grasshoppers Come to Grimsley High School’s Aide for 2023 Baseball Season

(Greensboro, NC) The Greensboro Grasshoppers announced this morning that they will be the primary home field for Grimsley High School’s baseball team in 2023. The school lost its playing field due to a Guilford County School Board decision to build a new middle school at that site.

“We are happy to help Grimsley in their time of need and allow their junior varsity and varsity baseball teams to practice and play the majority of their home games at First National Bank Field next spring,” said Grasshoppers President and General Manager Donald Moore. “This is the right thing for us to do and we hope Grimsley is excited about playing in a first-class professional facility.”

The Whirlies will have their first practice at First National Bank Field on February 14 and host their first home game on February 28, with the junior varsity playing at 3:30 PM and the varsity to follow at 6:00 PM.

“Grimsley is truly grateful to the Grasshoppers for being such a great community partner. Losing the Grimsley field due to school construction left our baseball players and coaches uncertain about their upcoming season. To have the opportunity to train and play games at First National Bank Field will be an amazing experience for them and our baseball community. Everyone associated with Grimsley athletics is extremely appreciative of the generosity shown by Donald Moore and the entire Grasshoppers organization.” said Ethan Albright, Grimsley’s Athletic Director.

The Grasshoppers have welcomed over 6 million fans in their 17 years at First National Bank Field. They open the 2023 season at home on Tuesday April 18th against the Greenville Drive. 1. Of course Grimsley would get to play at the grasshoppers stadium. Only the best for Grimsley and all their recruited students. But the better question is, if the boys baseball team gets to play their games in a professional facility, what treatment equal to that does the girls softball team get? Their field is lost due to construction too and we know they won’t be playing at a professional stadium. That doesn’t really seem equal or fair to those softball players. I’m sure there will be an excuse. I heard the softball games will be played in a old field at another school. No very equal at all.

  2. Any suggestions on a professional softball field the girls could use in Greensboro? I am not aware of any… I am sure numerous attempts to practice and play at the best and most convenient softball facility was made. Unfortunately, Grimsley can only use what others in community allow them to. All of these issues were brought to the GCS school system and they basically told Grimsley to figure it out on their own… The grasshoppers ownership is stepping up in a time of need when others were not willing to do so.

  3. You would think UNCG would let both teams use their facilities is this situation, since they are right across the street….That is a bad look on them IMO they should have jumped at the opportunity.

  4. Everyone is really supposed to believe that the ONLY softball field available for the girl’s team to use was at Rankin which is 14 minutes away and the boy’s team magically was offered a professional team’s stadium to use? Not even close to equal, but we all have to remember that there are no rules when it comes to male sports at Grimsley High School. The field that they are having the girls play on needs major improvements and not even playable, but that’s the only one they could find? The AD should be ashamed of themselves by leaving the girl’s in a mess and now trying to promote the boy’s teams playing in a professional stadium. They should both be playing at equal places. I’m sure there were high schools available to use. Those are GCS property that can be used. I’m sure the Grimsley Boosters and athletics are getting a kickback from the concessions and such at the Grasshoppers too. Only the finest for Greensboro High School! The recruits all need the best!

  5. There are some good people on both sides(Grimsley and Grasshoppers) that put this plan together…

This not an easy deal to pull off, and the parties that made this happen should be commended for their efforts…

I do wish UNCG could maybe step up and help out the Grimsley softball team, the Spartans are not far at all from the Grimsley campus…Grimsley could almost walk over there…

I feel there are still wheels that are turning, and one piece of the puzzle is in place..Give the Grimsley leaders more time to work on other options….

  6. This mess was all created under the previous leadership in GCS. Thank goodness she is gone. She tried to get rid of middle school sports and made it pretty clear that athletics were to be put on the back burner. Everyone knows that athletics is probably the best dropout prevention program for a lot of the student athletes.
Coaching supplements have not been increased in the last 20 years which is why a lot of good coaches are leaving GCS to go to places where their worth is recognized.
Hopefully most of the board members who profited from the former superintendent’s reign through cronism that rivaled Boss Tweed’s Tammany Hall will be replaced this November.
There is no reason that these perfectly good fields at Grimsley should be the new site for Kiser Middle School. Just poor planning and no respect for legacy or tradition.

  7. Amazing to me how very unappreciative people are today. If I was the Grasshopper Management I would consider taking the offer back. I imagine this is not going to be very convenient for them. I am very grateful to them and the outstanding AD at Grimsley for working this out Some of us appreciate others who try to do the right thing to make a bad situation better rather than sit in your butt and do nothing but complain. I swear some people would turn down a gold bar because it is too heavy to carry around.
