New York Vets top Greensboro Go-Rillas in the Gate City Turkey Bowl:Overtime Thriller with Hill to Trogdon for the Game-Winner at WGMS

It was the Gate City/Greensboro Turkey Bowl today/Thanksgiving Thursday, at the Western Guilford Middle School…
(The Gate City Turkey Bowl, a brain-child of Bud Wilkerson Jr.)

Some kind of tight tilt, with the New York team, also known as the New York Vets, topping the North Carolina team, known in some local circles, as the Greensboro Go-Rillas, and the annual Turkey Bowl ended in Overtime…

The final score was something like 42-36 in OT, and the game-winner actually came in the Second Overtime series/possession for the New York Vets, with the Vets’ Nathan Hill, hitting Justin Trogdon for the difference-maker…Hill is Trogdon’s son, so it was almost like Arch Manning hitting his grandfather Archie Manning for the game-changing TD…

This game was destined to be one of those matchups that would have to be decided by an extra period or two…The two teams were very evenly matched, with the New York Vets being led by Alan and his Gotham City Brothers, and the Vets, not to be confused with the NY Mets, Jets, or Sets, the Vets came ready to take home the “Turkey Leg” and on the very last leg of the game, the Vets proved they could out-last and leave the Greensboro Go-Rillas laid out, in agony on the field, where they lost for the first time in recent memory…

With young Grayson Holland at quarterback, the Go-Rillas were considered by many to be the favored team, as the 2022 Gate City Turkey Bowl commenced/began…The Go-Rillas were well stocked at QB with Holland throwing for 4 TD’s, plus he ran for a touchdown and he had 2 TD receptions…Grayson Holland has become a younger version of Scott Cooper(one of our former key players), and Holland was the Player of the Game today, for the Go-Rillas…

Enad Haddad had at least two interceptions for the Greensboro Go-Rillas, but he was still far off my mark of four interceptions/picks in one half, that came back in 90’s….Grayson Holland, Doug Brown, Joey Kirkman, Ron Davidson, Kevin Colvin, they were all getting in on the action for the Go-Rillas on this Thursday…

Nathan Hill, Justin Trogdon, Alan and his two brothers from upstate New York, Eric Davidson, the other high schooler from the Uwharrie Charter Eagles, they were the force that led the New York Vets to the Winner’s Thanksgiving Day Table, for this Thursday…Nathan Hill was from the Uwharrie Charter School, and Hill was a factor for the Vets, as they claimed the 2022 Title…

Hill’s dad, Justin Trogdon, was the real playmaker and TD maker for the Vets, as he was scoring TD’s early in the football game, and then he caught that Game-Winner for New York…Nathan Hill and Justin Trogdon took home Player of the Game honors for the New York Vets…Again, to see Trogdon prior to the game, you would not think that he would be “The Man” to carry his team, and the Championship Banner, back to Trinity…That is their current home area, and the people of Trinity can rejoice on this special Thanksgiving Day Thursday of 2022, because the New York Vets, have taken down the Greensboro Go-Rillas, and the Vets did it with a little help from their friends, from over in Trinity today…

Players of all ages stood along the line of scrimmage at the Guilford Middle School on this Thanksgiving Thursday/morning…We had Nathan(Tayson) Hill and his pal, both from the Uwharrie Charter School, Grayson Holland, the footballer/golfer from the local Northwest Guilford HS was with us, and Grayson is like our own version of Tony Romo, since the young Holland can hum the football, and he plays a mean game of golf too, just like Tony Romo does…RIGHT ON…

There were kids/young men in their teens, Eric Davidson was with us and played college football at Utah and at Appalachian State, and now he is an assistant coach at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, N.C. Eric is in his 20’s, then we had somebody that was in their 30’s, Doug Brown and Joey Kirkman have made it into their 40’s, Kevin Colvin is now in his 50’s, and we had Ron Davidson in his 60’s…Count me in for the 60 year-old and above crowd too…All sorts of age groups being represented out there today, on Thanksgiving morning…

I would like to keep going with this game for another 15 years, but if it is going to happen, the reality of that vision will remain to be seen….We had one of our regulars on the injured-list today, as Scott Holland had to sit out with a bad shoulder…Scott messed up his shoulder during a golf outing, and I think the incident happened over at Blair Park, which I believe is in High Point…

The high point of this Thursday was when Nathan Hill found his dad Justin Trogdon open inside a very tight window, and the New York Vets, defeated the Greensboro Go-Rillas in Double Overtime, at the Western Guilford Middle School…

With the way this post/article/story has been written, you may be thinking that this event never really happened, that I am just making it all up…No way man, I was there, and I never like to print this, and it is never easy to admit defeat, but we lost….There, I said, We Lost Today…

We came to conquer, but we walked out of the Western Guilford Middle School today, with an “L” in our back pocket, but we only have to wait 364 1/2 days for a chance at redemption…

Every year, right around this time, we all settle in to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday Season, but for the local pick-up football players, it isn’t a question of who will receive the first piece of Turkey when you sit down for the annual spread at your families’ Thanksgiving Day Dinner Table, the real question is, “Who will catch the very first pass, and then who will catch the last/final pass of the game, at the Gate City Turkey Bowl”

Remember, it is just a game, but for 14 Thanksgiving Day footballers, this Gate City Turkey Bowl was right up there with the Lions, the Bills, the Cowboys, the Giants, the Vikings, and the Patriots as they played after we were through at high noon, on Thanksgiving Thursday….
(7 on 7 today, at the Western Guilford Middle School.)

And as the New York Vets out-lasted the Gate City Go-Rillas this Thanksgiving Morning, the Lions, the Giants, and the Patriots will all try and take a play out of the New Vets playbook, and hang the upset on their opponents…

With the loss today, the Greensboro Go-Rillas will be expected to respond and come back with a win next year over the Vets, but it won’t be easy…We have just less than one year to get ready to take the football field again, and to restore redemption to the Greensboro Go-Rillas and their loyal fleet of faithful fans and followers…

Grayson Holland, Nathan Hill, Justin Trogdon, Enad Haddad, I just know all of these players from today’s game will be working on their NIL deals between now and next Thanksgiving Day 2023….Doug Brown, Joey Kirkman, Eric Davidson and some of the so-called older players, probably already have those NIL monies rolling in…

We will get you next year, just wait till next time, it is just one game…And those are the excuses that we must build upon, and live with, until November 2023 rolls around…

Lots of fun to still be able to get out and throw the old pigskin around, but it is even better when you can take home another victory…The Greensboro Go-Rillas record over something like the past 30 years, is something like 24-6…Not too bad/not too shabby…

But you lost today Go-Rillas, and I was standing right there beside you, as the Hill-to-Trogdon play broke our backs, and then it split our hearts right in-half/wide-open….

Time to put a wrap on the 2022 Thanksgiving Day Football Season…A one-game season, and now we are OFF until it is time to lace up the boots again…

You have to love this game, that never dies…The game lives on until the heart stops beating and Coach Lombardi will not let us lay down yet…

Do you have to always give your all, even in a pick-up football game, on Thanksgiving Day???

Give all you have, and in the end, that is all that Coach Lombardi would want you to give…

Happy Thanksgiving Holiday to all, and again, Congrats to New York Vets, on their outstanding Overtime Victory, here in 2022, at the Annual Gate City Turkey Bowl…
(Jim Nantz and Tony Romo would be proud of all that participated in today’s game.)

**********Special Recognition again, for today’s Players of the Game:Justin Trogdon and Nathan Hill for the New York Vets, while Grayson Holland claimed the honors for the Greensboro Go-Rillas….**********

+++++++++I do feel like Coach Lombardi was looking down on us today, and he is proud of the effort we put in.++++++++++
