Friday Football Finish:Game of the Week, Game of the Month, Game of the Year, with Greensboro Grimsley over Cornelius Hough in Triple OT(Jackson Henry could be the next mayor of the Gate City)

Step out of the way Mayor Nancy Vaughn, Jackson Henry, the Greensboro Grimsley High School sophomore kicker, might be ready to take over as the Mayor of Greensboro…

The kid just kicked the Grimsley Whirlies into Round Five of the NCHSAA Football Playoffs, with his 21-yard field goal in Triple Overtime, and Greensboro Grimsley tops Cornelius Hough, 40-37…

This was a huge win-win for the city of Greensboro…It came on the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend, and everyone that was at the game, if they were Greensboro people/residents, they had to be happy about that outcome…This was the only game in town on Friday night, and it turned out to be another one of those Games of the Week, Games of the Month, and Games of the Year, rolled into one…

I know we have talked about these types of games before, and you are probably saying, “Here he goes again”, but I am telling you, this football game was one for the ages, and it was not one for the faint of heart…

Three Overtime Periods, with the final score being Greensboro Grimsley 40, Cornelius Hough 37…And the halftime score was, Hough 9, Grimsley 7…Heck the score at the end of the Third Quarter was, Hough 9, Grimsley 7…

Grimsley was down by two points going into the Fourth Quarter, and then Grimsley out-scored Hough, 16-14 in the final period of regulation…After the First Overtime, the score was 30-30….End of Overtime Two, we were all tied up at 37-37…And in the Third OT session, Hough had the ball first, and the Grimsley defense shut the door on the Hough Huskies, and left them standing at the doorstep, left them laying at the one-yard line, after four downs…

Grimsley got to the five-yard line on their first carry of the Third OT, and then they got to the two-yard line on second down, but they came up empty on third down, and the Whirlies sent their sophomore kicker, Jackson Henry, on to attempt a 21-yard field goal that would win the ball game for the Whirlies, and Henry nailed it…You might say he put his Jackson/John Henry on that one, and he did…

Henry hit the game-winner for the Greensboro Grimsley Whirlies in Triple Overtime…At least for one day or so, the Jackson Henry for Mayor campaign will rain down upon the Gate City…He hit the winner…But boy, it was very hard for the Greensboro Grimsley Whirlies to reach that level…This was a tough hill to climb, and a hard-earned win/victory over the Cornelius Hough Huskies…

With that first half score of 9-7 Huskies, and then with the scoreboard reading 9-7 Hough, at the end of the third quarter, this game was like a backyard battle, and and in some ways, it sort of made you think we were in a quiet storm…

But, the fourth quarter, and the three Overtime Periods were anything but quiet…Grimsley got a 23-yard TD pass from Ryan Stephens to Alex Taylor…Then Grimsley went for two with the snap going to the Whirlies’ freshman backup QB Faison Brandon, who in turn handed the ball off to the regular quarterback, Ryan Stephens, who passed the ball to TE/H-back Nolan Albright, for the two-point conversion…

Hough tied the game up at 23-23 on a TD pass from the Huskies’ Tad Hudson, who hit his WR Markell Quick right in the hands, but the ball bounced off of Quick, and ricocheted right to Hough’s receiver Jacob Dossey, who hauled in the ball for a Hough Huskie touchdown…The old ricochet-play and it worked for Hough…

Grimsley got a 72-yard TD run from the Whirlies’ sophomore RB Mitchell Summers in the fourth quarter…

I mean it was back-and-forth all night long, but in the Fourth Quarter and the Overtime stanzas, this game was more like a game of ping pong…Back-and-forth across the field/net, the Huskies and the Whirlies traded possessions and the lead belonged to one team and then to another, and for the most part, this game seemed like it wanted to be all tied up…

Win-serve, lose-serve, add-in, add-out….This game had it all, but the Jackson Henry kick sent the Greensboro Grimsley Whirlies on to the NCHSAA West Regional Final Game/Championship Game at home, next Friday night, versus the Weddington Warriors…Weddington(13-1) defeated AC Reynolds 17-10 on Friday night, to earn the trip to Greensboro, where they will face off with the Whirlies, next Friday evening…

Overall you would just have to say that Grimsley and Hough put on quite the show on this Friday Thanksgiving Holiday evening, at Jamieson Stadium…

Some of those key Grimsley numbers from the Friday night win over Hough…Mitchell Summers runs for 184 yards on 24 carries, with 72 of those yards coming on his long touchdown run…Two TD’S in the game for Summers…Alex Taylor with three Grimsley receptions for 46 yards, and one TD…Half of Taylor’s yards came on his 23-yard TD pass from Ryan Stephens…Terrell Anderson had 7 receptions for 55 yards for Grimsley…

Grimsley was never able to hook up the long bomb passes on Friday night, with most of the yards coming on short passes, for five-to-ten yards…

Grimsley QB Ryan Stephens ended up going 11-21 passing for 104 yards…Stephens, who had been a little under-the-weather this week prior to the game, Stephens finished up with one TD pass, two TD runs, a two-point conversion pass, and a two-point conversion run…Pretty active and effective night for Ryan Stephens…Stephens responsible for 22 of Grimsley’s 40 points in this Overtime playoff game…

Such an exciting and interesting high school football game, and really a sweet win for the Grimsley Whirlies…Grimsley now at (14-0) on the season, and the Cornelius Hough Huskies close out their year/season, at (11-3)…Jackson Henry is now being listed and charted as our Steak n Shake Player of the Game…We are currently giving a nod to Grimsley LB Kahlil Stimpson on Defense for the Whirlies…
(Jackson Henry, also the early favorite to be the next Mayor of Greensboro.)

What a game, and what a night…I am going to have to go back and listen to some of this game on
GreensboroSports Radio….I usually don’t listen back much, but this might be one of those games where it might be some fun, to go back and replay this one…Did any of you listen in on Friday night??? Let us know, and did we make the cut with our broadcast, on GreensboroSports Radio???

Grimsley made the cut, and the Whirlies have survived and advanced here in the Fall of 2022…Gonna be neat to see what happens next for these Greensboro Grimsley Whirlies…

That Hough team will head back to the Charlotte area, and back to Cornelius to be exact, and they head home with one of the top kickers in the nation in Nolan Hauser, just a junior. Hauser kicked nearly all of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks, and he hit for three field goals, and Hauser was 4-4 on his PAT kicks…He did miss two field goals, one due to a bad snap, and that was very unusual for him…Hough had a very solid QB in senior Tad Hudson…Their RB JT Smith was very productive, while wide receivers Markell Quick and Jacob Dossey gave their QB Hudson, very good targets all night long…Hough spent much of the game, running their offense with an empty backfield, with the exception of QB Hudson…Plus Hough had both JT Smith and Jacob Dossey jumping over the top of Grimsley defenders to garner extra yardage…Dossey and Smith just jumped over the top of their opponents from the Grimsley defense, and the Huskies just kept on running…

To the Whirlies advantage, Grimsley was stepping up when they had to, and so many Whirlie football players were coming through for the Greensboro reps…Some kind of effort and this was one of the occasions where both teams left everything they had out there on the Joe Franks Field…

Some kind of game, some kind of night, on Friday November 25, 2022 at Grimsley High School, home of the Greensboro Grimsley Whirlies…One of those Games of the Night, Games of the Month, and Games of the Year, all rolled into one…We will get the scoring rundown up here for you ASAP…But for now we will be signing out, and returning with more soon, here at GreensboroSports.com…

The Eastern Guilford Wildcats(9-5) fell 28-25 at South Point, and that brought down the curtain on a Super Season for the EG Wildcat crew…One heck of year/season for Eastern Guilford HS football…More on them, later on, on Saturday morning in The Rewind…
