Pride beats Hampden-Sydney on a walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th inning

High Point, NC – The Greensboro College Baseball team has ventured into extra innings numerous times in this early season and today’s match-up with Hampden-Sydney College proved to be another test for the Pride, as they had to withstand a Tiger comeback and then stage a comeback of their own. When all was said and done, Greensboro would come away with a thrilling walk-off win in extra innings to defeat H-SC by a final score of 13-12.

The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but a sacrifice fly to left field by Senior Connor Morehouse (Kansas City, MO) drove in three-time USA South Rookie of the Week, Freshman Brody Gardner (Asheboro, NC) to tie the game. However, H-SC would reclaim the lead when they stole home, but in the bottom half of the second inning, the Pride bats came alive when Sophomore Cam Watts (Kernersville, NC) hit a solo homerun, which was followed by RBI’s from Freshman Hudson Powell (Greensboro, NC), Gardner and Junior Adam Weber (Mebane, NC) to give Greensboro a three run advantage, 5-2. The lead would increase to four runs in the third inning and then the Tigers would get one back. However, with two runners on in the bottom of the fifth inning, Junior Cameron Edmonds (Whitsett, NC) came to the plate and blasted a three-run homerun to left field, giving the Pride their largest lead of the game, 9-3. H-SC would stage a comeback and tie the game at 9-9, but the Pride, once again, grabbed the advantage after Powell hit an RBI single to right center, scoring Junior Drake Carrick (Lexington, NC) to go back out in front, 10-9. The Tigers would force extra innings and then take a two run lead in their half of the 10th inning, but after loading the bases, Sophomore Samuel Hayen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) came to the plate with two outs and drove a ball into center field, driving in three runs for the walk-off win, 13-12.

Edmonds led Greensboro with 4 RBI’s, while Hayen and Hudson added 2 RBI’s each. On the mound, Senior Layton Helms (Sandy Ridge, NC) came in the game to pick up the win. The Pride will return to action this weekend as they host the Triad Invitational at Truist Point Stadium. Their first game is scheduled for Friday, March 10th against Arian College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm.
