Comeback Bid Falls Just Short, 6-5
Four unanswered runs not enough for win

GREENSBORO, NC – The Winston-Salem Dash put up four unanswered runs across five innings and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 6-5, Thursday night at First National Bank Field.

Greensboro (47-43) wasted no time in the bottom of the first. Tres Gonzalez homered to lead off the game for the Grasshoppers, and three batters later, Will Matthiessen hit a two-run inside-the-park home run giving the home side an early 3-0 lead. Matthiessen added to the advantage in the third driving home two runs on a double making it 5-0 Greensboro after three frames.

Winston-Salem (43-46) started to chip away in the fourth. Second baseman Loidel Chapelli got the Dash on the board with a solo shot to right field cutting the deficit to four, 5-1. In the fifth, Chapelli struck again. With the bases loaded, the Cuba native singled to center plating two runs, making it 5-3.

Dash starter Tyler Schweitzer settled in after the first three innings, fighting through six innings allowing the five runs on five hits and punching out five. After Johnny Ray worked a clean seventh, the Dash cut it to a one run game. Caberea Weaver singled home a run in the eighth making it 5-4, but the Dash could not find anything more.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Grasshoppers bought some insurance after Jack Brannigan left the yard making it 6-4 and the homer ended up being the difference.

In the ninth, Tim Elko picked up his 20th RBI in a Dash uniform making it 6-5, but Greensboro held on to take game three.

Chapelli finished the night 2-for-3 with a trio of RBI while Wilfred Veras and Elko both picked up multi-hit outings.

The Dash and Grasshoppers meet for game four Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from First National Bank Field.
