Got word Today/Tuesday that the local legendary Guilford County footall referee, Joe Jones has died…He was on the middle school football fields reffing as recently as two years ago…I saw him out there…I used to see him up at the McDonalds on Battleground at Cone Blvd. too….
I think he also was a referee for high school/middle basketball and for high school wrestling over the years…Many said he was a former Marine, and he did not take any junk, but at the same time he was always fair, and did his best to help the kids, and worked to make sure they understood the game and why he made the calls that he made….
The thing I liked most about referee Joe Jones was that he would keep the games moving….He would tell those middle school football players all the time, Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go…Let’s get this thing moving….He would not let them lollygag around and waste time….
Saw Joe Jones many times up at Grimsley High School’s Jamieson Stadium, where he would be refereeing Kiser Middle School football games, and saw him over at Kernodle Middle School quite a few times too…..
Let’s just say here, Joe Jones will be missed….
RIP:Referee Joe Jones
The FINAL Whistle has blown/The Horn has sounded…..
I always enjoyed working youth football games with Joe. He kept you on your toes and tried to maintain a positive flow to the game. He will be missed.
