UNCG Softball Splits on Day One of I-75 Tournament

ATLANTA, GA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team opened the I-75 Tournament with a 13-1 five-inning victory over Army and then fell to Georgia Tech, 14-7, on Friday at the Shirley Clements Mewborn Field.

Game 1: UNCG 13 – 1 (5 innings)

The Spartans jumped on board early as Grace Loftin hit her third home run of the season to left center, scoring Brooklynn Maxwell in the top of the first. Jorde Chartrand followed Loftin with her fourth homer of the season, giving UNCG a 3-0 lead.

After neither team scored a run in the second, the Spartans tacked on two more runs in the top of the third with Samantha Beck’s third double of the season that scored Loftin and Anna White, 5-0. UNCG’s sixth run came from Jessie Shipley’s RBI double in the top of the fourth that scored Maxwell from first, 6-0.

Army had its only two hits of the game in the bottom of the fourth, as Farris flew out to right field and Edwards scored to cut the deficit to five, 6-1.

In the top of the fifth, UNCG registered seven runs off five hits to give the Spartans a 12-run cushion, 13-1. All seven runs came off of home runs during the inning. Rylie Williams hit her first homer of the season for two RBI, while Maxwell tallied her fifth blast of the season that scored Jaden Cheek. After the Black Knights got their first out of the inning, White crushed her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field.

In the circle, Maddie Spell retired three-straight batters in the bottom of the fifth to secure her fourth win of the season. She struck out three batters in 5.0 innings of work and gave up just two hits.

UNCG: 6-8
Army: 0-11

Game 2: Georgia Tech 14 – UNCG 7

UNCG got off to an 6-0 lead after posting a single run in the top of the second and five runs in the top of the third. Madelyn McKinnon led off the scoring with a RBI single. The third inning’s five runs included a run off a wild pitch, a Loftin RBI double, a White RBI single, and Beck’s second homer of the season.

After keeping Georgia Tech from scoring in the first three innings, the Yellow Jackets jumped into action and scored seven runs off five hits to take their first lead, 7-6.

The Spartans were able to tie the game with Meredith Harwood’s third home run of the season, 7-7.

The tied score did not stay for long as Georgia Tech had another big offensive inning in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs on six hits and one error for a 14-7 advantage.

UNCG continues playing in the I-75 Tournament by facing Robert Morris tomorrow, Saturday, February 24 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shirley Clements Mewborn Field. The Spartans then follow that game with Georgia Tech again at 4:30 p.m.
