UNCG’s Spell & White Receive SoCon Softball Weekly Awards

Southern Conference Announces Weekly Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two Georgia natives from the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team were selected by The Southern Conference (SoCon) as SoCon Pitcher and Player of the Week. Redshirt-junior Maddie Spell was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week, while senior Anna White was selected as SoCon Player of the Week.

Spell had four appearances, going 3-1 and tossing two complete games, inside the circle last week. In the team’s win against Army, Spell threw five innings, striking out three batters, and allowing one run. Against Robert Morris, the redshirt junior entered the contest in the fourth inning and proceeded to allow zero runs for the rest of the game in UNCG’s comeback win.

Spell’s weekend culminated with a no-hitter versus Kennesaw State as she threw eight innings and struck out four batters. The only baserunner for the Owls in the game came via a hit batter. The Lawrenceville, Georgia, product’s performance marked the 14th no-hitter in program history. The last time UNCG had a no-hitter was when current junior Reese Byrd tossed a five-inning no-hitter against Delaware winning 8-0 at the UNCG Softball Stadium on February 13, 2022.

Spell is currently leading the conference with six wins, seven game starts, 40.2 innings tossed, second with two complete games, fourth with 18 strikeouts, fifth with a .227 opponent batting average, and 10th in the conference with a 3.27 ERA.

FROM SPELL
“It was really fun to play in my hometown this weekend in front of so many friends and family. Our bats really came alive which kept me confident in trusting my pitches. I also felt like our team showed resilience with our at-bats and outstanding defense. Winning this award shows how hard we’ve worked in the bullpens with Coach Brynne about being very detailed with our pitches. As always, I would not have been able to do this without the hard work of my teammates and their confidence in me.”

UNCG’s White hit .500 with a .615 on-base percentage and 1.500 slugging percentage last week. During the opening day of the I-75 Tournament on Feb. 23, the senior went 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI in a 13-1 victory over Army. Later that day, White had a hit, an RBI, and scored two runs in a 14-7 setback against Georgia Tech.

On Feb. 24, the Dunwoody, Georgia, native blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning, helping the Spartans erase a four-run deficit to defeat Robert Morris 8-4. Following that game, White hit a home run and drew a walk in the squad’s 6-2 loss to Georgia Tech. In the final game of the weekend, White had a double, an RBI, and was hit by two pitches in UNCG’s 3-0 extra-inning victory over Kennesaw State.

White is currently fifth in the conference with four home runs, 12 RBI, .731 slugging percentage and sixth with two hit by pitch.

FROM WHITE
“This past weekend was a dream come true! Having my friends and family there to cheer on me and the team was amazing! Coach Stewart and I worked hard this week on my hitting mindset and making small adjustments with my swing. This helped me feel really confident and relaxed in the box this past weekend. I trusted myself and tried to just have fun playing the game I love. I’m so proud of what the team did this weekend and I’m even more excited to keep working hard to achieve our goals. Go Spartans!!”
