UNCG Softball Welcomes Minnesota Gophers for Tuesday Matchup

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team continues a 10-game home stretch this week by hosting Minnesota on Tuesday, March 5 at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans are currently 11-10 overall. Minnesota will face Charlotte today at 4:00 p.m. before heading to Greensboro. The Gophers are currently 8-8 overall.

This will be the 10th meeting between the two teams, where Minnesota has a 9-0 advantage over UNCG. Head Coach Janelle Breneman has faced the Gophers once in her career in the Blue & Gold, falling 8-0 in five innings on February 23, 2014 in the UNCG Spartan Classic when Minnesota was ranked No. 20.
All regular season softball home games at the UNCG Softball Stadium are free admission. Concessions will be open and outside food is not permitted. All weekday home games (not including Friday) will be Bark in the Park games, where spectators can bring their dogs.

RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS

UNCG was chosen to finish first in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Spartans received four first-place votes.
Senior Brooklynn Maxwell, redshirt-junior Maddie Spell, and junior Jorde Chartrand were named to the SoCon Preseason first team.
Junior Grace Loftin and sophomore Rhyann Jones were named to the SoCon Preseason second team.
UNCG won its sixth-straight SoCon Regular Season title in 2023.
The Spartans won their third SoCon Tournament Championship in route to the program’s seventh NCAA Tournament bid.
This was their third ticket to the NCAA Tournament in six years.
Maycin Brown and Blayke Batten return for their fifth year in the Blue & Gold.
UNCG added five freshmen and one transfer to the 2024 roster.
Maddie Spell was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 26), while Anna White was named SoCon Player of the Week (Feb. 26).
Maxwell is pacing the Spartans with a .417 batting average, 17 RBI, and seven home runs.
Anna White also has 17 RBI.
Maxwell is pacing the SoCon in runs scored (23), hits (30), home runs (7), and at bats (72). She is fifth in the nation in total bases (61).
The Spartans are third in the nation in walks (90), 16th in home runs per game (1.33), 30th in double plays per game (0.52), 38th in doubles (30), 42nd in slugging percentage (0.480).
Spell has pitched 48.2 innings this season so far and struck out 21 batters.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

UNCG is coming off a three-game series sweep against in-state Piedmont Triad foe Elon.
The Spartans defeated the Phoenix with scores of 6-2 and 7-3 on Saturday at Hunt Softball Park, and 6-3 on Sunday at UNCG Softball Stadium.
During the 6-3 win on Sunday, UNCG scored six unanswered runs to take the sweep.
Anna White went 5-for-10 this week with a team-high five RBI.
RUNDOWN ON MINNESOTA

Minnesota finished the 2023 season 38-19 overall and 17-6 in the Big Ten.
The Gophers punched their 10th-straight ticket to a NCAA Regional last season.
Minnesota has won the last four of five games, including an 11-8 win over Charlotte on Sunday.
Jess Oakland is leading the team with a .490 batting average, swinging 25-for-51 at the plate. She is pacing the team with 21 RBI, 19 runs scored, seven home runs, a .961 slugging percentage, and .581 on base percentage.
Bri Enter has tossed 45.0 innings this season and has a 3.27 ERA with a 4-3 record in the circle. She has struck out 29 batters.
Nationally, Minnesota is 44th in home runs per game (0.94).
Oakland is nationally ranked eighth in home runs per game (0.44) and 10th in slugging percentage (0.961).

UP NEXT
UNCG will host its second tournament of the season this weekend from Friday, March 8 to Sunday, March 10. The Spartans will open the UNCG Invitational on Friday, playing UMass at 3:00 p.m. and then Merrimack at 5:30 p.m. UNCG will also host UMBC and Charleston Southern in the tournament.
