UNCG Baseball Takes Game One at South Florida, 8-3

TAMPA, Fla. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team opened up its weekend series at the University of South Florida with an 8-3 win in game one on Friday night at the USF Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After recording four hits in the first inning, the Spartans got on the board with two runs. First, GC Jarman singled to right field to send Trey Truitt home for the 1-0 lead. Mitchell Smith then singled through the left side to score Caleb Cozart for the 2-0 lead.

The Bulls cut the deficit to one in their half of the first inning after notching one run off a double play (2-1). South Florida added another run in the second inning to tie the game (2-2).

UNCG regained its lead in the top of third inning after Aidan Brewer scored off a ground ball from Zachary Walsh (3-2). The Spartans held the lead for the remainder of the game.

The Spartans tacked on another run in the sixth inning when Walsh singled to right field, to give Brewer his second run of the day (4-2).

The Blue & Gold added to its advantage in the seventh inning with four runs. First, Brewer doubled to left center to bring in Jarman and Cozart (6-2). Later on, Walsh tripled to right field on a 1-0 count, sending in Matt Venuto and Jarman for the 8-2 lead.

South Florida cut the deficit to five in its half of the seventh inning with one run.

Danny Thompson Jr. closed out the final two innings on the mound for the Spartans to throw three strikeouts after facing nine batters, giving UNCG the 8-3 win over South Florida.

NOTES:
Cozart led the Spartans on the mound with a season high six strikeouts.
Walsh led the Spartans with a season high of four RBI.
Jarman and Brewer led the Spartans with four hits apiece.
Brewer led the Spartans with three runs on the day.
UNCG had 14 hits to South Florida’s six.

The Spartans will stay in Tampa, Fla., on Saturday, March 16 for game two of the series against South Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the USF Baseball Stadium.
